LOWNEY WINS GOLD MEDAL AT JUNIOR WORLD GRECO-ROMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BUCHAREST, ROMANIA, AUGUST 12-15Garrett Lowney (Appleton, Wis./Minnesota Storm) claimed a gold medal at the 1999 FILA Junior World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships in Bucharest, Romania, August 12-15. This event featured the best 17-20 year old Greco-Roman wrestlers in the world.
Lowney won five matches on the way to his World Championship at 97 kg/213.75 lbs., including a 6-0 decision over Ilia Lejava of Georgia in the gold-medal match.
He first scored decisions over Arsen Uriandmkapeli of Ukraine, 6-3, and Han Tae-Young of Korea, 3-0. In the quarterfinals, Lowney decisioned Dec Lukasz of Poland, 3-1, and scored a 3-0 decision over Dintchev Kaloyan of Bulgaria in the semifinals to move to the gold-medal match.
Lowney is a student at the Univ. of Minnesota, where he was a redshirt last season as a freshman. Lowney won five Junior National gold medals as a high school star from Appleton, Wis.
Lowney becomes the first U.S. Greco-Roman World champion on this age level since 1993, when Jason Gleasman of New York claimed a gold medal at super heavyweight.
Lowney's gold-medal performance helped lead the United States to an 11th place finish in the team standings. Russia claimed the team title.
Dustin Brewer (Kansas City, Mo./Competitors Association) placed seventh at 127.5 pounds with a 1-2 record at this weight class.
Darnell Lollis (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) claimed tenth place at 127.7 pounds with a 1-1 record during the tournament.
Four U.S. wrestlers were unable to place in the top 10 of their weight classes: Davey Starks (Stoughton, Wis.) at 110 pounds, Brandon McNab (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 138.75 pounds, Carl Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./ATWA) at 167.5 pounds, Paul Devlin (Livingston, N.J.) at 286.5 pounds. The U.S. did not have entries at 152 and 187.25 pounds.
The head coach for the FILA Junior Greco-Roman U.S. team was Mark Fuller of Salt Lake City, Utah, a four-time Greco-Roman Olympian. Vern Zellner of West Orange, N.J., was the assistant coach. United States Greco-Roman Development Coach Ike Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo., also went with the team. Anderson placed sixth in the 1988 Olympics.
