FARGO, N.D. – Michigan’s Adam Coon took all of the suspense out of his much-anticipated finals match at heavyweight.

Coon scored an early takedown and followed with a succession of turns in rolling past Minnesota’s Sam Stoll by a quick technical fall to cap an exciting Junior Nationals Greco-Roman competition.

Coon blanked Stoll 7-0 in the first period on Tuesday afternoon at the Fargo Dome. Coon remains on track to become the first wrestler to win back-to-back USA Wrestling Junior Triple Crowns.

Coon, a University of Michigan recruit, captured his third straight Junior Nationals title in Greco. He won a FILA Cadet World title in freestyle in 2011.

Coon won his second straight Junior Folkstyle Nationals title in April in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The third leg of the Triple Crown, the Junior Nationals freestyle tournament, will be held later this week in Fargo.

Coon came back strong after being swept by Stoll in two straight matches in the finals of the FILA Junior World Team Trials last month in Stillwater, Okla.

“I don’t like to use the word revenge, but it was definitely redemption for me,” Coon said. “I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. I didn’t feel like I wrestled well in Stillwater and he capitalized on it. I’m not going to lie, he destroyed me. I had the mentality here that I just wanted to get after it.”

Coon is coached by his father, Dan, who also is the Michigan state chairman for USA Wrestling.

“It’s absolutely fantastic having my dad in my corner,” Coon said. “It was great to be able to hug him and share that moment with him. It’s been an amazing experience to wrestle for him.”

Coon, who also won the award for most falls in the least amount of time, now takes aim at completing the final leg of the Triple Crown.

“It would be a huge honor to be able to do it,” he said. “I just need to make sure I take it step by step. I’m going to celebrate this for 24 hours and then go right back to work in freestyle.”

Illinois wrestler Davonte Mahomes also remained on track to win a Triple Crown after defeating Illinois teammate Xavier Montalvo 4-0 in the 160 finals.

Mahomes won a Junior Folkstyle Nationals crown in April and will seek the third leg of the Triple Crown later this week in freestyle.

“I’m not surprised by this – we train hard enough where we can win national titles,” Mahomes said. “I wasn’t planning on wrestling Greco at all, but I showed up for our camp early and one of the coaches told me he signed me up for Greco. The Triple Crown was not something that I was even thinking about. Now I’m happy to try and pursue it.”

Juniors have been eligible for the Triple Crown since 2007.

Illinois won the team title with Minnesota second and Wisconsin third.

Idaho’s Hayden Tuma repeated as Junior Nationals champion after rolling past Missouri’s Rodney Clevenger 8-0 in the 132 finals. Tuma did not allow a point in the tournament and was named Outstanding Wrestler.

Tuma is a two-time FILA Cadet World Team member who will represent the U.S. at the FILA Junior World Championships next month in Bulgaria.

“We’ve been doing a lot of really hard training and I’ve received some great coaching,” Tuma said. “We wrestle aggressively and that style is paying off for us.”

Tuma’s high school teammate, Idaho’s Jon Jay Chavez, recorded a first-period technical fall over Andrew Millsap of Kansas in the 152 finals. Chavez won FILA Cadet Nationals in Greco and freestyle this year.

“I’ve made huge jumps in my skill level since I started training with the Suples Wrestling Club,” Chavez said. “I’m a completely different wrestler now. Wrestling in that club has done wonders for how I’m competing out there now.”

Dalton Roberts, Coon’s teammate at Fowlerville High School, built a quick early lead before twice having to rally in downing Kirk Johansen of Illinois in a wild 22-16 finals match at 100 pounds.

Roberts took a quick 4-0 lead before Johansen stormed back to score 10 unanswered points. One point from losing by a technical fall, Roberts regrouped with an aggressive attack to tie the match 10-10 after one period. Roberts fell behind again in the second period before regaining control for good.

Roberts won a FILA Cadet Nationals Greco title in 2012.

“I haven’t even placed in my state (high school) tournament, so this is huge for me,” Roberts said. “I have been training really hard for this and it paid off.”

Fargo veteran Ronnie Bresser of Oregon scored a late reversal to hold off Minnesota’s Skyler Petry in the 113 finals. Bresser won a Cadet Nationals Greco title here two years ago.

“I put in a lot of hard work in the practice room every day and it paid off for me,” Bresser said. “The new rules are more exciting obviously. It’s fun with these rules. There is a lot more scoring and a lot more action out there.”

Hawaii’s Joshua Terao jumped to an early lead en route to defeating Minnesota’s Blane Tschida 5-3 in the 120 finals.

Terao, third in the 2012 Cadet Nationals in Greco, executed a cartwheel into a backflip in celebration of his win. He became Hawaii’s first Junior Greco champion since Travis Lee 13 years ago.

“This is amazing,” Terao said. “Travis is my idol and I wanted to duplicate what he did. It’s a great feeling, it’s awesome.”

Washington’s Chandler Rogers earned his third straight Fargo Greco-Roman title by defeating Jared Johnson of Kansas by a 7-0 technical fall in the first period. Rogers won Cadet Nationals Greco titles in 2011 and 2012.

Florida’s Brandon Staley executed a textbook headlock in the closing seconds to down California’s Joe Cisnero in the 106 finals. Down 10-7, Staley hit the winning three-point move to prevail on match criteria.

New Jersey’s Joseph McKenna edged Washington’s Jake Velarde 6-5 in the 138 finals. McKenna placed eighth at the 2012 FILA Cadet World Championships and won a 2011 Cadet Nationals title in Greco.

Top young prospect Roy Nash overcame an early deficit to defeat Wisconsin’s Tyler Schmidt 9-2 in the 220 finals. Nash was a double Cadet Nationals champ in 2012 and won the 2013 FILA Cadet Nationals in Greco.

Hometown boy Jordan Shearer of Fargo struck early and often in blanking Oklahoma’s Cub Yeager 8-0 in the 126 finals. Shearer was fourth in the 2013 FILA Cadet Nationals in Greco.

Fargo followed with a second champion when the powerful Preston Lehmann rolled to a quick 8-0 win over Maryland’s Dan Hawkins in the 182 finals.

California’s Blayne Briceno wasted no time in taking charge in defeating Georgia’s Matthew Moody 8-0 in the 145 finals. Briceno finished the match early with a succession of turns.

Georgia’s Joseph McClure took an early lead and stayed there in downing California’s Jeremy Sweany 2-0 in the 195 finals. McClure is part of a much-improved Georgia program that has made a big impact in Fargo.

Junior wrestlers are 16-18 years old.

Day 5 of the eight-day event is scheduled for Wednesday in Fargo. Competition resumes at 9:30 a.m. with the Cadet Nationals freestyle tournament starting along with the Junior Women’s Duals.
