FARGO, N.D. – Michigan heavyweight Adam Coon is on track to make USA Wrestling history.

Coon is looking to become the first wrestler to win back-to-back Junior Nationals Triple Crowns.

Coon remained on course to achieve the feat by going undefeated on the first day of Junior Nationals Greco-Roman competition on Monday at the Fargo Dome.

Coon, a University of Michigan wrestling recruit who also had numerous Division I offers to play football, went 5-0 in the Greco competition on Monday.

Coon recorded falls of 14, 20, 20, 39 seconds in his first four matches before winning his fifth match of the day by technical fall.

Coon is seeking his third straight Junior Nationals title in Greco. He won a FILA Cadet World title in freestyle in 2011.

Coon won his second straight Junior Folkstyle Nationals title in April in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The third leg of the Triple Crown, the Junior Nationals freestyle tournament, will be held later this week in Fargo.

Coon will face a tough challenge in trying to win a third straight Junior Greco title. Minnesota’s Sam Stoll also is competing at 285. Stoll swept Coon in two straight matches in the finals of the FILA Junior World Team Trials last month in Stillwater, Okla.

Stoll was third in the Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman last year. Coon defeated Stoll in that event.

Stoll went 5-0 on Monday. Stoll won his first four matches by technical fall on Monday.

Junior Greco-Roman wrestling will continue on Tuesday at 9 a.m. with the finals scheduled for 2:15 p.m. at the Fargo Dome.

Two other wrestlers also stayed on course to win Triple Crowns in the Junior division. Illinois’ Davonte Mahomes (160) and Wisconsin’s Jacob Morrissey (170) also went unbeaten in Greco on Monday.

Juniors have been eligible for the Triple Crown since 2007.

Junior wrestlers are 16-18 years old.

The Junior Greco-Roman field of 817 is up 44 from last year. Wrestlers from 45 states are competing in the Junior Greco-Roman tournament.

Junior Nationals women’s freestyle division starts; four returning champs in field

The women's Junior freestyle division set another entry record with 225 entries from 34 states, up 24 athletes from last year.
 
Four 2012 Junior National women’s champions have returned and are unbeaten on their first day of competition: Amy Hou of Georgia (105), Cody Pfau of Colorado (105), Kayla Miracle of Indiana (139) and Alexis Porter of New York (148). All are unbeaten during the first session of action.
 
Last year, Hou was the champion at 97 pounds, and Pfau was at 105 pounds, and now find themselves in the same weight class this year. This weight features three ASICS First Team members, Hou, Pfau and Cadence Lee of California.
 
Seven 2012 Junior National women’s runners-up are back this year: Thai Ha Sloan of Hawaii (97), Steffanie Hampton of Michigan (117), Jenna Elmlinger of Wyoming (125), Cassandra Herkelman of Iowa (130),  Jasmine Mendoza of California (148), Kiaya Van Scoyoc of Washington (172) and Kaitlyn Hill of Michigan (172)
 
The returning runners-up are without a loss except for Elmlinger, who lost her first match to Taylor Alva of Texas, 13-5
 
Many of Saturday’s Cadet Nationals champions have also entered the Junior division, including Outstanding Wrestler Teshya Alo of Hawaii, who is entered at 125 pounds.

Junior women’s wrestling will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday with the finals set for 5:45 p.m.
