Photo by John Sachs/Tech-Fall.com KAZAN, Russia – On the first day of Greco-Roman, Tyrell Fortune (Portland, Ore., (Titan Mercury WC/Grand Canyon WC) placed fifth at the World University Games. Fortune was defeated by 2012 Junior World champion Balint Lam of Hungary in the bronze-medal match, 3-5. He was defeated in his opening match by 2010 Senior World champion Amir Aliakbari of Iran by technical fall, 0-7. When Aliakbari reached the finals, Fortune was pulled back into the repechage rounds. He pinned Sergo Gogisvanidze of Georgia to earn his spot in the bronze-medal round. On Thursday, Fortune won a bronze medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle on the opening day of wrestling at the World University Games. Fortune was an NCAA Div. II champion for Grand Canyon this year, and was selected as the Div. II Wrestler of the Year. He was second in men’s freestyle at the 2013 U.S. World Team Trials. 2012 University World champion Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill./NYAC/USOEC) was defeated in the repechage rounds, falling just short of a medal match at 55 kg/121 lbs. Nowry opened the tournament strong with two technical fall wins, beating Harutyun Hovhannisyan of Armenia, 8-0 and Hyeongmuk Choi of Korea, 8-0. In the quarterfinals, he was defeated by Victor Ciobanu of Moldova, 3-5. He was knocked out with an 0-6 loss in the repechage by Shota Tonokura of Japan. Dan Olsen (Algonquin, Ill.,/Team Thunder) went 1-1 at 84 kg/185 lbs., and Joe Locksmith (Annapolis, Md./Navy Mat Club) dropped his only bout at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Both did not reach the repechage when the opponents who beat them failed to reach the finals. Three U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers will compete on Tuesday, the final day of wrestling at the World University Games.
