HILL TO BATTLE FOR GOLD MEDAL, HAHN FOR BRONZE MEDAL AT FILA JUNIOR WORLD FREESTYLE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIATwo U.S. wrestlers have qualified for medal matches with strong performances at the 1999 FILA Junior World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Sydney, Australia, on August 20.
The tournament features the best 17-20 year-old freestyle wrestlers in the World. Sydney will be the host city of the 2000 Olympic Games.
For the second straight year, T.J. Hill (Farmington, Mo./Dave Schultz WC) will compete in the FILA Junior World gold-medal match at 110 pounds, which will be held Saturday
Damion Hahn (Lakewood, N.J./NYAC) has qualified for the bronze medal match at 187.25 pounds on Saturday.
Hill won two matches on Friday to qualify for the finals. He defeated N. Zhaniyazov of Kazakhstan, 3-1 in his pool finals. In the semifinals, he scored an impressive 11-0 technical fall over F. Sanchez of Spain, 11-0.
Hill will face D. Mansurov of Uzbekistan in the gold-medal match. Hill was a 1998 FILA Junior World silver medalist, and boasts 11 age-group national titles during his outstanding youth career.
Hahn won his first match of the day, defeating S. Ghorbani of Iran by technical fall in the quarterfinals, 14-3. In the semifinals, Hahn dropped a 4-1 decision to T. Danko of Ukraine.
Hahn's opponent in Saturday's bronze medal match will be S. Park of Korea. Hahn, a graduate of Lakewood High School, is a three-time Junior Nationals freestyle champion and the 1999 FILA Junior Nationals champion. He will attend the Univ. of Minnesota in the fall.
Two U.S. wrestlers were defeated in the quarterfinal round and eliminated from medal contention: Ben Martinez (Pixley, Calif./Tulare Titans) at 127.7 pounds and Jared Lawrence (Sandpoint, Idaho/Minnesota Storm) at 152 pounds.
Martinez was defeated in the quarterfinals by Q. Rivaltay of Cuba, 9-1. With the loss, Martinez is expected to finish eighth in his weight class.
Lawrence was edged in the quarterfinals by K. Choi of Korea, 4-3. Based upon his performance during the tournament, Lawrence will place fifth in his weight class. Lawrence competes for the Univ. of Minnesota.
Four other U.S. wrestlers began competition on Friday. Three remain unbeaten: Leroy Vega (Portage, Ind./Minnesota Storm) at 119 pounds, Sean Gray (Flemington, N.J/Hokie WC) at 138.75 pounds and Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Ohio WC) at 213.75 pounds.
Vega won two matches and has qualified for the quarterfinals in his weight class. Vega won by technical fall over D. Chen of China, 13-3, then defeated S. Beghdyan of Armenia, 6-4. Vega competes for the Univ. of Minnesota.
Gray won his only match of the day, beating R. Ashby of New Zealand by technical fall, 11-1. Gray wrestles for Virginia Tech Univ.
Rowlands also scored a technical fall in his only match, beating S. Ungor of Turkey, 12-2. A graduate of Bishop Ready High School, Rowlands will attend Ohio State Univ. in the fall.
Tony Gansen (Bell Point, Minn./Cowboy WC) dropped his first match of the tournament at 167.5 pounds to A. Djeriev of Russia, 7-2. He remains alive in his pool competition. Gansen is a student at Oklahoma State Univ.
The U.S. team was determined at the 1999 FILA Junior Freestyle National Championships and World Team Trials held in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 24-25.
Team USA is coached by Brad Penrith of Cedar Falls, Iowa, the assistant coach at the Univ. of Northern Iowa, and Mark Schwab of Minneapolis, Minn., the assistant coach for the Univ. of Minnesota.
