FARGO, N.D. – Hawaii’s Teshya Alo capped a dominating tournament with a strong performance in the Cadet Nationals women’s freestyle finals.

The talented Alo took charge immediately in rolling past Wyoming’s Jenna Elmlinger by a 10-0 technical fall in the 124-pound finals on Saturday night at the Fargo Dome.

Alo repeated as Cadet Nationals champion. She will represent the U.S. next month at the FILA Cadet World Championships in Serbia.

“My game plan for Fargo was just to treat it like any other tournament and don’t give anybody a chance to score,” said Alo, who was named Outstanding Wrestler. “I wanted to work on my technique and use some of my throws out there.”

The eight-day ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet Nationals, the largest wrestling tournament in the world, kicked off on Saturday in Fargo.

California crowned three champions on its way to claiming the team title.

FILA Cadet World Team member Gabrielle Garcia of California came out strong en route to posting a 10-0 win over Idaho’s Koral Sugiyama at 115.

California’s Angelia Llanes blanked returning Cadet champion Jessica DeHart of Oregon 11-0 in the finals at 108. Llanes was second at 108 last year while DeHart won a title at 101 in 2012.

California’s McKenzie Bacich kicked off the finals by building a nine-point, first-period lead before downing Wisconsin’s Brooke Thurber by a 12-1 technical fall at 95.

Colorado’s Maya Nelson struck quickly with a pair of big moves on her way to downing Washington’s Tatum Sparks 10-0 in the 132 finals. Nelson was second in this event last year.

“It feels so great to win this,” Nelson said. “I have worked really hard to get to this point. I have spent some time training at the Olympic Training Center and it has helped tremendously.”

Florida’s Nadine Fiege surrendered the first takedown before storming back to pin returning champion Ryan Gibbons of Washington in the final match at 198 pounds. Fiege won a FILA Cadet Nationals championship this year.

South Carolina’s Genesis Patterson earned the title at 101 pounds, winning a round-robin format. She recorded a fall over runner-up Gabriella Garcia of California en route to the title.

Iowa’s Rachel Watters bounced back from an early deficit to defeat New York’s Alexis Bleau 5-2 in the 143 finals. Watters placed second at the 2012 Cadet Folkstyle Nationals.

Michigan’s Kenya Spencer won by injury default over California’s Brittany Yost in the 154 finals. Spencer won a Junior Folkstyle Nationals title this year.

Taylor Rosario of Texas earned a Cadet title by defeating Azusenna-Molina Sanchez of California 10-3 in the 172 finals. Rosario won a FILA Cadet Nationals title this year.

This is the third year Cadet Nationals have been held for the women in Fargo. There was a slight increase in participation in this year’s Cadet women’s field.

Cadet wrestlers are 15 and 16 years old.

Day 2 of the eight-day event is scheduled for Sunday in Fargo. The Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman competition is scheduled to start on Sunday morning at 9 o’clock.
