HILL WINS GOLD MEDAL, HAHN PLACES FOURTH AT FILA JUNIOR WORLD FREESTYLE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, AUG. 21; VEGA, ROWLANDS STILL IN MEDAL CONTENTION

T.J. Hill (Farmington, Mo./Dave Schultz WC) won a gold medal at 110 pounds at the 1999 FILA Junior World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Sydney, Australia, on August 21.

The tournament features the best 17-20 year-old freestyle wrestlers in the World. Sydney will be the host city of the 2000 Olympic Games.

Hill defeated D. Mansurov of Azerbaijan in the gold-medal match, 6-2. Hill won four matches on the way to his World title.

It was the second straight medal that Hill has won at the FILA Junior level, to go along with a 1998 FILA Junior World silver medal. Hill also boasts 11 age-group national titles during his outstanding youth career.

Damion Hahn (Lakewood, N.J./NYAC) placed fourth at 187.25 pounds. He was defeated in the bronze-medal match by S. Park of Korea, 3-2. Hahn compiled a 3-2 record during the tournament.

Hahn, a graduate of Lakewood High School, is a three-time Junior Nationals freestyle champion and the 1999 FILA Junior Nationals champion. He will attend the Univ. of Minnesota in the fall.

Two other U.S. wrestlers remain in the hunt for medals on Sunday, the final day of competition: Leroy Vega (Portage, Ind./Minnesota Storm) at 119 pounds and Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Ohio WC) at 213.75 pounds.

Vega had no matches on Saturday, but won both of his bouts on Friday. He will compete in a quarterfinal match on Sunday morning against Rena Rosales of Cuba. If Vega wins three matches on Sunday, he can claim the gold. Vega competes for the Univ. of Minnesota.

Rowlands lost in his pool competition on Saturday to D. Otiashvili of Georgia, 11-4. However, he had scored enough points during the tournament to qualify for the quarterfinals. Rowlands dominated D. Van Staaten of South Africa by technical fall, 10-0, in the quarterfinals. He will face Geurgui Gogschelidze of Russia in the semifinals on Sunday morning. If Rowlands wins his next two matches, he would become the champion. A graduate of Bishop Ready High School, Rowlands will attend Ohio State Univ. in the fall.

Sean Gray (Flemington, N.J/Hokie WC) had a 1-1 record on Saturday, and was eliminated from medal contention at 138.75 pounds. Gray stopped C. Aguilera of Canada, 4-1, in the first match of the day, but was defeated in the quarterfinals by L. Spiridonov of Russia by a 12-2 technical fall. Gray is expected to place sixth in his weight class. Gray wrestles for Virginia Tech Univ.

Tony Gansen (Bell Point, Minn./Cowboy WC) was eliminated from medal contention at 167.5 pounds. Although he defeated G. Szabo of Hungary, 5-3, on Saturday, his 1-1 overall record was not sufficient to qualify for the quarterfinals. Gansen is a student at Oklahoma State Univ.

Four talented teams are closely bunched at the top of the standings, all with a chance to claim the team title: Ukraine, United States, Russia and Iran.

Team USA is coached by Brad Penrith of Cedar Falls, Iowa, the assistant coach at the Univ. of Northern Iowa, and Mark Schwab of Minneapolis, Minn., the assistant coach for the Univ. of Minnesota.
