Veronica Carlson (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Carlson earned praise from U.S. National Coach Terry Steiner for her work during the team’s training camp this past week at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

“Veronica has just taken her career into her own hands,” Steiner said. “She goes about her business and doesn’t ask for anything. She is a tireless worker who I believe is coming into her own. She will be a force to deal with in the future. We expect big things out of her.”

Carlson won April’s U.S. Open in women’s freestyle wrestling at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. She is scheduled to compete at the World University Games on July 14 in Kazan, Russia.

Carlson will look to make her first Senior World Team when the final three spots on the American team are determined in a World Team Wrestle-Off on Aug. 3.

Carlson, 22, has had a strong season. She placed second at the Dave Schultz Memorial and third in the Ukrainian Memorial this year. She won a Junior World silver medal in 2009.
