SANTIAGO, Chile - The United States will participate in the FILA Junior Pan American Championships, set for Santiago, Chile, July 12-14. This event features athletes 17-20 years old competing for nations in North, Central and South America. Seven of the eight members of the U.S. women’s team were either runners-up or placed true second at the Body Bar FILA Junior Nationals in Lakeland, Fla. in May. Leading the United States will be Kayla Brendlinger of King College at 55 kg/121 lbs. Brendlinger placed third at the 2013 Women’s University Nationals in March before placing fifth at the 2013 Las Vegas/ASICS U.S. Open in April. 2012 Junior Nationals freestyle champion Kayla Miracle will represent Team USA at 59 kg. Miracle won her second consecutive Junior Folkstyle National title this year and has won a Cadet World silver medal. Competing at 72 kg/108 lbs. for the U.S. is 2012 Cadet World bronze medalist Anastasia Lobsinger. Also looking for a strong showing in Santiago will be Shai Mason at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. who placed seventh at the 2013 U.S. Open. There will be one men’s team entered, with seven of the U.S. athletes competing in both the Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle divisions. The team was formed by athletes who were successful in the FILA Junior World Team Trials in Stillwater, Okla. in June, as well as the FILA Junior Nationals in Las Vegas, Nev. in April. Two-time FILA Junior Nationals champion Adrian Cordova will represent the USA at 50 kg/110 lbs. Cordova won the 2013 FILA Junior National freestyle title at that same weight class in April in Las Vegas before placing second at the 2013 FILA Junior World Team Trials in Stillwater, Okla. in June. 2013 World Team Trials champion Sam Brooks will wrestle freestyle for the U.S. at 84 kg/185 lbs. Brooks fought his way through the challenge tournament bracket at the Trials before sweeping one-seed Vic Avery in the final series. Brooks, who attends Iowa, also placed fourth at the 2013 FILA Junior National Championships in Vegas. Matthew Gray will represent the U.S. at 74 kg/163 lbs. after a runner-up finish at the 2013 FILA Junior National Championships in freestyle.
