COZART, NAYLOR WIN GOLD MEDALS AT VETERANS WORLD FREESTYLE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BUCHAREST, ROMANIA, SEPT. 2-5   Two U.S. wrestlers won gold medals at the Eighth FILA Freestyle Veterans World Championships in Bucharest, Romania, September 2-5.  

The competition featured athletes 35 years old and above, and included entries from nations all around the world.

Russ Cozart of Brandon, Fla. won his fifth career Veterans World title, by claiming the gold medal at 152 lbs./69 kg in Div. C (46-50 years). Cozart claimed his previous Veterans World titles in 1992, 1993, 1997 and 1998.

Cozart won four matches on the way to the title. He opened with a 10-3 win over Akhbart Binsadi of Iran, then stopped Imre Jaszhai of Hungary, 2-0. In the semifinals, Cozart pinned Cornea Cornel of Romania. In the gold medal finals, Cozart scored a 10-0 technical fall over Genusarous Kvins of Lithuania.

Scott Naylor of Dallastown, Pa. won a gold medal at 138.75 lbs./63 kg. Naylor was a 1999 U.S. Veterans National champion.

Naylor won all three of his round-robin matches, with victories over Reza Lorvan of Iran, 6-3, Magomed Habigoula of Russia, 5-0, and Steve Turgeon of the United States, by a 10-0 technical fall.

Claiming a silver medal for the United States was Ronald Hughes of San Jose, Calif. at 127.75 lbs./58 kg. He was defeated by Boris Sava of Moldova in the finals, 8-1.

Three U.S. wrestlers won bronze medals: Bradley Swartz of Auburn, Wash. at 167.5 lbs./76 kg in Div. A (35-40 years), Eric Davies of Boca Raton, Fla. at 286 lbs./130 kg in Div. B (41-45 years) and Wayne Boyd of Palm Springs, Calif. at 152 lbs./69 kg in Div. D (51-55 years).

Swartz had a 4-1 record in the tournament. Davies went 3-1 in the tournament and Boyd had a 2-2 record in his weight class.

Eight U.S. wrestlers claimed fourth in their weight classes.

In Div. A, Lew Sondgeroth of Aurora, Colo. (152 lbs./69 kg ) and Kevin Klemm (167.5 lbs./76 kg) placed fourth.

In Div. B, Steve Turgeon of Vernon, Conn. (138.75 lbs./63 kg ), Jeff Powell of Clovis, Calif. (152 lbs./69 kg) and Paul Vinson of San Diego, Calif., (213.75 lbs./97 kg) were fourth.

In Div. C, Tommy Reyna of Midwest City, Okla. (138.75 lbs./63 kg ) and Ronald Cole of Auburn, Wash. ( 213.75 lbs./97 kg ) placed fourth, while in Div. D, Roger Oleson of Stanford, Calif. (213.75 lbs/97 kg) claimed fourth place.

The U.S. team was led and coached at the Veterans World Championships by Larry Nugent of Colorado Springs, Colo., USA Wrestling's Executive Assistant and a veteran freestyle wrestling coach.
