OREM, Utah – There are 11 athletes who are still alive in the quest for a coveted USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crown, after scoring victories in Greco-Roman at the 2013 Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals on Tuesday.
These 11 athletes also won gold medals at the 2013 USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa in April.
There is only one athlete eligible for the Triple Crown in the Intermediate division, Garrison Dendy of Georgia, the champion at 65 pounds.
Five athletes are alive in the hunt for a Triple Crown on the Novice level – Jesse Vasquez of California (85), Alfonso Martinez of Arizona (90), Abe Assad of Illinois (95), Jeremiah Hollen of Arizona (120) and Santos Cantu of Oregon (140+). Vasquez has moved up a weight, after winning his folkstyle title at 85 pounds in Iowa.
The Schoolboy division has five still eligible for the Triple Crown: Jace Koelzer of Kansas (70), Cole Moody of Utah (105), Brock Hardy of Utah (128), Travis Wittlake of Oregon (136) and Brandon Orrino of Washington (144). Three of the athletes have gone up a weight from where they won their national folkstyle titles: Hardy, Wittlake and Orrino.
None of those eligible were Triple Crown winners last year. Wittlake is attempting to win his third career Triple Crown, after winning as an Intermediate in 2010 and a Novice in 2011.
There are very few repeat Kids National Greco-Roman champions from last year. Wittlake was a Novice Greco-Roman champion at 120 last year. Santos Cantu of Oregon, this year’s Novice 140+ champion and a Triple Crown candidate this year, also won that weight class in Greco last year.
There were only three Kids Triple Crown winners last year, so the potential for a larger group this year exists.
The freestyle competition will be held on Wednesday.
