Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Metcalf won the U.S. World Team Trials title in men’s freestyle at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. on Saturday at Oklahoma State’s Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla.
Metcalf swept U.S. Open champion and two-time NCAA champion Kellen Russell 7-0 and 8-1 in the final-round series. Metcalf advances to September’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Metcalf avenged a loss from April’s U.S. Open when he downed past Junior World bronze medalist and two-time NCAA champion Jordan Oliver 6-3 in the Challenge Tournament finals. Metcalf placed third at the Open.
Metcalf, a two-time NCAA champion and Hodge Trophy winner at Iowa, made his second World Team. He represented the U.S. at the 2010 Worlds in Moscow, Russia.
Metcalf had placed second in the 2011 World Team Trials and 2012 Olympic Team Trials.
