STILLWATER, Okla. – Mark Grey is back in the FILA Junior World Championships.

And ready to win a medal for his country this time.

Grey won a pair of hard-fought bouts against Zane Richards in the finals of the FILA Junior World Team Trials on Sunday at Oklahoma State’s Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Grey, a Cornell recruit, topped Richards 5-4 and 6-4 to sweep the best-of-3 final-round freestyle series at 60 kg/132 lbs. Grey placed fifth at the 2011 Junior World Championships.

“I’ve learned so much and improved so much since 2011,” Grey said. “I’m a lot more experienced now. I think I can go over there and win a World title now.”

Grey lost to eventual champion Ben Whitford in the first round of the FILA Junior Nationals in April in Las Vegas before finishing fourth. Richards beat Grey in the third-place match in that event.

Grey also beat 2012 Junior World Team member Earl Hall en route to the title.

“It was a real tough weight class and it’s awesome to win this,” Grey said. “I was working hard on moving my feet and getting to my attacks. Zane beat me at FILA Juniors and I just had to wrestle tough and trust myself.”

Champions at the FILA Junior World Team Trials advance to the Junior World Championships on Aug. 13-18 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Oklahoma State All-American Alex Dieringer put on a show for his home fans by sweeping Dylan Palacio in the freestyle finals at 74 kg/163 lbs. Dieringer made his second straight Junior World Team.

“It was great wrestling in front of these fans,” Dieringer said. “It made me work harder. I have a lot of confidence now after getting third at NCAAs and I want to carry that over into freestyle.”

Dieringer’s Oklahoma State teammate, Austin Marsden, also made his second Junior World Team with two impressive wins over past Cadet World champion Adam Coon in the freestyle finals at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Past Cadet World Team member Thomas Gilman earned a spot on his first Junior World Team by sweeping Nathan Tomasello in the freestyle finals at 55 kg/121 lbs. Gilman redshirted at the University of Iowa this past season.

“Tomasello is real short and real quick – I needed to stay in good position out there,” Gilman said. “Being in the Iowa room obviously helps a lot. Last summer, I went to Iowa City and I was getting my butt kicked left and right. Now I’m scrapping in that room and kicking butt. It’s crazy how fast you progress when you have great workout partners.”

FILA Junior Nationals champion Jason Tsirtsis rolled to two straight wins over 2012 Cadet World champion Zain Retherford in the freestyle finals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.

Gilman’s Hawkeye teammate, Sam Brooks, looked strong in sweeping Victor Avery in the freestyle finals at 84 kg/185 lbs.

The powerful Kyle Snyder earned a pair of lopsided wins to sweep Willie Miklus in the freestyle finals at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Snyder won both matches by technical fall.

Ethan Lizak won two in a row over 2012 Junior World Team member Adrian Cordova in the freestyle finals at 50 kg/110 lbs.

The explosive Geordan Speiller made his second straight Junior Word Team with two dominant victories over Dillon Cowan in Greco-Roman at 74 kg/163 lbs.

“My mindset is to be extremely strong mentally and be ready to get after it out there,” Speiller said. “I wanted to dominate here and I want to dominate at the World Championships.”

Isaiah Varona defeated Arthur Carmona two matches to one to earn the title in Greco at 55 kg/121 lbs. Varona won the decisive third match 1-0.

Lucas Sheridan is back on the Junior World Team after winning the Greco title at 84 kg/185 lbs. He took two straight over William Baker in the finals.

Hayden Tuma looked dominant in taking two straight from Kevon Powell in Greco-Roman at 60 kg/132 lbs.

Sam Stoll swept two straight matches from Coon to win the Greco title at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Coon attempted a difficult double while wrestling Greco and freestyle on Sunday.

Sahid Kargbo dropped the first match before coming back to win two straight over Alejandro Sancho in the Greco finals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.

Tirso Lara downed Erik Zorrilla in two straight matches in Greco at 50 kg/110 lbs. Kevin Beazley won by forfeit in the Greco finals at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
