USA Wrestling and Universal Sports Network combine to present the 2013 ASICS U.S. Wrestling World Team Trials on a tape-delayed basis from Gallagher-Iba Arena on the Oklahoma State campus in Stillwater, Okla.
This exciting event was hosted Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22, featuring athletes in the three Olympic styles of wrestling: men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. Champions will qualify to represent the United States at the 2013 World Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary, on Sept. 16-22.
The two-hour highlight show of the Championship Series finals will feature both days of competition and will air nationally on Universal Sports on Saturday, July 13, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. In addition, Universal Sports will air an encore presentation of the special to be announced at a later date.
There will be two mats during the Championship Series best-of-three finals in Stillwater, and the action will be covered by different talented and experienced broadcast teams.
The freestyle competition will be held on one mat, with veteran wrestling announcer Joe Miller doing play-by-play and wrestling leader and award-winning actor Billy Baldwin serving as color commentator.
The mat with Greco-Roman and some women’s freestyle action will be called by veteran wrestling announcers Van Stokes and Shane Sparks, with Stokes doing play-by-play and Sparks providing color commentary.
There was memorable action at this event in all three Olympic styles of wrestling, and fans will not want to miss a chance to see the best matches on national television.
This is the second USA Wrestling event which has aired on Universal Sports this year. On May 15, the USA vs. Russia dual meet as part of the “The Rumble on the Rails†in Grand Central Terminal in New York City aired live on Universal Sports. Earlier in the day, the USA vs. Iran dual meet was also aired live on NBC Sports Network.
Last year, Universal Sports and NBC Sports Network also broadcast “The Grapple in the Big Apple†on a tape-delayed basis from Times Square in New York City. The show featured a USA vs. Russia freestyle dual meet and the U.S. Olympic Team Wrestle-off for the 60 kg/132 lbs. position on the U.S. Olympic Team in men’s freestyle wrestling.
The coverage of the ASICS U.S. Wrestling World Team Trials is an important event in the Keep Olympic Wrestling movement, an international effort to retain wrestling as a sport on the program of the 2020 Olympic Games and beyond.
