With 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun out of the mix this season, the 48 kg weight class in women’s freestyle is now looking for a rising star to take over the weight.

2012 Olympic Trials runner-up Alyssa Lampe looks to be the favorite at this weight heading into the World Team Trials in Stillwater, Okla. in two weeks.

Lampe lost a tough three match series to eventual bronze medalist Chun in last year’s Olympic Trials in Iowa City, Iowa, but has rebounded from that loss nicely having won the 2013 U.S. Open championship and posting a 3-1 record at the Women’s World Cup held in Mongolia last March.

Lampe was a bronze medalist at the 2012 World Championships at 51 kg last September and also competed in the 2010 World Championships at 48 kg.

Lampe defeated the explosive Victoria Anthony 3-0, 5-2 in the finals of the U.S. Open in Las Vegas.

Anthony is fresh off a winning University National Championship in Oklahoma City in March. She finished third in last year’s Olympic Trials and is a two-time Junior World Champion.

Other top contenders in the weight class include a slew of youngsters looking to make a run to the World Championships.

Erin Golston has come on strong this year picking up a FILA Junior National Championship at 44 kg, a second place finish at University Nationals and a third place finish at the U.S. Open. Golston also boasts two Junior World bronze medals.

Olympic Training Center team member Candace Workman won a University National Championship up at 51 kg this year, also placing fourth at the U.S. Open.

2013 Pan American team member Emily Webster wrestling out of Oklahoma City University will also be a factor at this weight.

Other young wrestlers looking for a breakout performance in Stillwater include U.S. Open place winners Bernara Moore and Tamika Jones (Waldorf), and 2013 WCWA All-Americans Shannon Constantine (King), Caitlyn Chase (Missouri Baptist) and Kristi Garr (OKCU).

A special note about the women’s division at the World Team Trials, which is contended only in the four Olympic weights (48 kg, 55 kg, 63 kg, 72 kg). Athletes who have qualified for the Trials at a non-Olympic weight class can choose to compete at one of the four Olympic weights. Some qualifiers may choose not to enter at all and focus on making the world team at a non-Olympic weight later this summer.

Look for some of the qualifiers at 51 kg to make the drop down to 48 kg for the competition in Stillwater.

The new FILA rules will be in place for the World Team Trials. The rules will include two three-minute periods, cumulative scoring, two-point takedowns and the passivity shot clock.
