ESPN2 TO AIR WORLD FREESTYLE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21 AT 3:00 P.M. EASTERN TIME 

ESPN has notified USA Wrestling that it will air coverage of the 1999 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Ankara, Turkey.

The one-hour show is scheduled to be shown on ESPN2 on Thursday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

The show will be produced on a taped-delayed basis by USA Sports Broadcasting, the broadcast division of USA Wrestling.

The 1999 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships will be held in Ankara, Turkey, October 7-10. The competition will feature the best freestyle wrestlers in the world, battling for coveted World titles. This event has added importance, as it serves as the first and most important qualifying event for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

The United States is one of the nations that are expected to challenge for individual and team honors at the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships.

The U.S. team is led by two-time World Champion Terry Brands (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 127.75 pounds, 1997 World Champion Les Gutches (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 187.25 pounds, two-time World medalist Cary Kolat (Madison, Wis./Dave Schultz WC) at 138.75 pounds and 1998 World bronze medalist Lincoln McIlravy (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 152 pounds.

Four U.S. wrestlers will be competing in their first World Championships: Eric Akin (Overland Park, Kan./Dave Schultz WC) at 119 pounds, Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 167.5 pounds, Dominic Black (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 213.75 pounds and Stephen Neal (Bakersfield, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 286 pounds.

The U.S. team will be led by co-head coaches Dan Gable of Iowa City, Iowa, John Smith of Stillwater, Okla. and Greg Strobel of Bethlehem, Pa., along with National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett of Colorado Springs, Colo.
