Day one of the 2013 FILA Cadet National Freestyle Championships is in the books and was highlighted by dominating performances by some of the best FILA Cadets in the Nation.

At 54kg, Kaid Brock of Oklahoma has proven to be a force.  Brock, of Stillwater High School, has run the table so far, scoring in double digits in all but one of his matches.  The one match Brock did not score put up double digit points, he pinned his opponent in 0:22.  With one more win, Brock will wrestle in the 54kg championship bout, possibly against Stevan Micic of Indiana, who has not allowed a point all tournament, or Ohio’s Austin Assad who is also undefeated.

There is no short of talent at the 63kg weight class, spearheaded by California standout Aaron Pico.  The Junior National Champion has won by technical fall in all of his bouts and will likely wrestle in the title match.  Facing Pico could be Larry Early III, who has put together an impressive undefeated run in his part of the bracket, or Joseph Smith, son of Oklahoma State head coach Jon Smith.  The younger Smith has only suffered a one point loss to Early III.

Yesterday Jon Jay Chavez of Idaho torched the competition to easily win the FILA Cadet Greco-Roman title at 69kg and earn the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for the tournament.  Chavez has started the freestyle tournament right where he left off yesterday and has won each of his seven matches by technical fall.  Chavez will likely wind up in the championship bout and could face a tough opponent in Nick Reenan from Texas.  Reenan has gone undefeated so far in his bracket and has won by technical fall in all but one of his matches, including a victory over California's Anthony Valencia. 

A day after placing third in the FILA Cadet Greco Roman tournament at 76kg, Texas’s Bo Nickal has already locked up a spot in the 76kg freestyle finals.  Nickal ran the table in his bracket, winning every match by fall or technical fall with the exception of one 8-0 decision.  Who Nickal will face for the title has yet to be determined, but there is a good chance it will be Mark Hall.  The Minnesota native is currently undefeated and has won every one of his matches by technical fall while only allowing one point in all of his bouts.  The only wrestler now standing in Hall’s way of the finals is Mark Weiler of Pennsylvania.

Roy Nash has looked unstoppable at the 100kg weight class.  Already the Greco Roman champion at the same weight class, Utah’s Nash has gone undefeated to this point and won all of his matches by technical fall.  Nash has only given up three points in all of his bouts and will wrestle Christian Jenco for a spot in the championship match.  We could get a bit of déjà vu here as Nash could face Lance Benick of Minnesota who has already secured his place in the 100kg finals. This would be a rematch of yesterday’s Greco Roman finals in which Nash prevailed after Benick received three cautions and was defaulted out of the match. 

The 2013 FILA Cadet Freestyle Nationals will wrap up tomorrow with the action beginning at 9:00 am.
