Guerrero also replaced Brands at the 1999 Pan American Games, after Brands became ill and could not compete. Guerrero won a silver medal at the Pan American Games, which was held in Winnipeg, Canada, July 27-28.
The World Championships begin on Thursday, October 7, with competition at four weight classes: 54 kg, 63 kg, 76 kg and 97 kg. Four other weight classes begin competition on Friday, October 8: 58 kg, 69 kg, 85 kg and 130 kg. Guerrero will weigh in on October 7 with the second set of athletes, and his weight class will compete from October 8-10.
Guerrero completed his college career at Oklahoma State Univ. this year, after winning three NCAA Div. I titles for the Cowboys (1997, 1998, 1999). Originally from San Jose, Calif., Guerrero was a three-time California state high school champion.
He has placed third at the U.S. National Wrestling Championships the last two years. He will be competing at his first World Championships for the United States on the Senior level, but has represented the USA at a number of major World-level events on the age-group levels.
Guerrero will have the opportunity to compete for his college coach, John Smith, during this event. Smith, the head coach at Oklahoma State Univ., is serving as one of the three co-head coaches of the 1999 U.S. World Team, along with Dan Gable and Greg Strobel.
