Logan Storley of Minnesota took down Matthew Brown of Penn State with no time remaining to secure an upset win over the 2013 NCAA Runner-up. The win propelled Storley, 4th at the 2013 NCAA Championships, into the quarter finals of the 79kg weight division at the 2013 ASICS University National Freestyle Championships. The Storley-Brown bout highlighted the first day of the tournament in which all weight classes wrestled up to the quarter finals.

In the 55kg bracket, Zach Sanders of Minnesota and Nico Megaludis of Penn State appear to be on a collision course to meet in the finals. If the two were to meet it would be a rematch of the 2012 NCAA quarterfinal bout in which Megaludis upset the favorite Sanders. Sanders, who has won his first two matches by technical fall, will meet Dominique Price (Midwest RTC) in the quarter finals while Megaludis will face off against Jordan Wigger (Citadel Old Tim).

Tyler Graff of Wisconsin has not allowed a point on his run to the quarter finals in the 60kg weight class. On the bottom half of the same bracket, Johnni DiJulius of Ohio State won gritted out a tough match against James Gulibon of Penn State to earn a spot in the quarter finals. DiJulius will meet Cashe Quiroga (Wolverine Wrestling Club) while Graff will face off against Jade Rauser (Wolverine WC) tomorrow.

The 66kg bracket has proven to be one of the more top heavy of the tournament. Jason Chamberlain (Titan Mercury) has strolled into the quarter finals; not giving up a point and defeating each of his opponents by technical fall. He is set to face Matt Bystol (NYAC-Harlem) who won by technical fall against his first two opponents before winning by decision in his third match.

Hunter Stieber of Ohio State has looked impressive on his run to the quarter finals. The 2013 NCAA All American (6th) defeated fellow NCAA All American (7th) Evan Henderson (North Carolina) in his first match 8-4. Stieber won by technical fall in his next match and won a battle with Chris Villalonga of Cornell to earn a spot in the quarter finals.

At 74kg all eyes have been on David Taylor of Penn State, and the NCAA runner-up has not disappointed. Taylor’s road to the quarter finals includes three technical falls (11-0; 10-0; 13-3) and one pin (1:47). Taylor’s teammate James Vollrath has also qualified for the quarter finals and if he wins his match against Ian Miller (Golden Pride) and Taylor beats Logan Molina (Iowa State) it will be Nittany Lion vs. Nittany Lion for a spot in the finals.

The 79kg bracket is highlighted not only by the Storley-Brown match, but also by the return of Oklahoma’s Andrew Howe. After going through multiple surgeries and taking a year off Howe looks as if he hasn’t missed a beat, winning by technical fall in each of his first three matches and not allowing a point. Howe will face Mark Martin of Ohio State in the quarter finals.

Edward Ruth (Penn State) and Cameron Simaz (Finger Lakes) have both been dominant on their respective sides of the 84kg bracket. Ruth, a 2013 NCAA Champion, has won each of his matches by technical fall leading him into a match up with Ohio State’s Kenneth Courts in the quarter finals. After a first round by, Courts won by technical fall (10-0) in his first match and pinned Gabe Dean (Finger Lakes) to earn set up a match up with Ruth. Simaz has not given up a point in any of his matches, all of which he won by technical fall. The 2012 NCAA Champion will wrestle Nathaniel Brown (Lehigh Valley WC) in the quarter finals, who has also yet to allow a point.

Kent State’s Dustin Kilgore qualified for the quarter finals by winning by technical fall (10-0) over Paul Weiss of Appalachian State. Kilgore, who placed 4th at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, will meet Taylor Meeks (NWRTC) in the quarter finals. Oklahoma’s Travis Rutt has also looked impressive in the top half of the 96kg bracket. Rutt pinned Joshua Fox of Ohio State in 0:29 and then won by technical fall (10-0; 11-0) in his next two bouts earning him a spot in the quarter finals. Brothers Nathan (Iowa) and Micah (HWC) Burak both qualified for the quarter finals but a matchup between the two would not be possible until the finals.

At 120kg, Tyrell Fortune (Grand Canyon) pinned one opponent and won by technical fall against two others to make it to the quarter finals. Fortune will wrestle Matt Tourdot who qualified for the quarter finals by beating John Gusewelle (Bison WC) by technical fall and winning an 8-4 decision over Mimmo Lytle (Golden Pride).
