LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Jayson Patino of American Top Team was a double winner at the Grappling World Team Trials, winning the Gi competition on Saturday and the No-Gi competition on Friday.

Patino won a best of three series at 71 kg, beating Jerome Gage of Boxing, Inc. in two straight matches, both by submission. In the first match, he scored a submission at 4:25, then got a submission at 3:06 in the second bout.

Champions earned a spot on the U.S. team competing at the 2013 Grappling World Championships in Canada in June.

Winning the largest weight class with an impressive 3-0 record at 77 kg was Peter Sutton  of Stable Jiu Jitsu. All three of his wins were by submission. He clinched the title with his third submission, beating runner-up Will Durkee of Edge MMA & Fitness in 1:50.

At 84 kg, three athletes competed in a round-robin, with all three earning 1-1 records. Based upon tie-breaking criteria, Robert Yamashita of Navy won the title. He beat third-place Jeff Funicello, 2-0, but lost to runner-up Marc Brewer, 2-1.

Winning their World Team spot by sweeping best-of-three series in two straight were Aaron Yoches of Edge MMA & Fitness at 100 kg and Phillip Lobsinger at +100 kg. 

Yoches scored a pair of submissions over Jeff Zastrow of the Air Force WC, in 2:24 and 2:45. Lobsinger beat Joel Bane of the Air Force WC by submission in 27 seconds in the first match, then took the second with an injury default.

Uncontested champions in the men’s division were John Cicio at 62 kg, Pedro Torres at 66 kg and Shaun Scott at 96 kg, along with Veronica Graves at 58 kg in the women’s division.
