There was a positive turnout for the inaugural Western Junior Regional Women’s Freestyle competition, which took place Wednesday at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev., with nearly forty young women competing for gold. 

High school freshman Teysha Alo of Hawaii dominated the tournament at 130 lbs. with a 3-0 record and three technical falls against Izzy Valle, Katerina Lobsinger and Jasmine Mendez, all wrestling out of California. 

“I think I did pretty good,” Alo said after her final match. “I practiced hard with my coaches. It feels good. I feel like I trained hard and I deserve what I trained for.”

Alo was a gold medalist at the 2012 Cadet National Championships in Fargo, N.D. She said she hopes to see a lot more girls at next year’s Western Junior Regionals. 

Also taking a gold medal home is high school senior Kaylee Chevez of California at 105 lbs., who went 3-0 and had two impressive first-period pins against Katelyn Laurents of Nevada and Harmonie Roberts of California. 

The Western Junior Regionals was Chevez’s first freestyle tournament, who took first at the recent Girls Folkstyle Nationals in Oklahoma City, Okla. on March 30, 2013 and has gone undefeated in folkstyle this year.

“I’ve only been wrestling for four years, my senior year I went undefeated,” said Chevez. “This is my first actual freestyle tournament this year. It’s fun. It’s more aggressive, you can injure people faster.”

2012 Cadet World bronze medalist Anastasia Lobsinger of California went 2-0 in her bracket at 159 lbs., earning her a gold medal over Kendall Reusing of California.

Jasmine Bailey of Iowa went 4-0 at 117 lbs., showing her talents in the form of two technical falls and two pins. Bailey was champion at the 2013 Girls Folkstyle Nationals at 112 lbs.

Other winners from today’s tournament were Sariyah Jones of California at 97 lbs., Madison Tung of California at 112 lbs., Alyssa Gonzalez of California at 121 lbs., Forrest Molinari of California at 139 lbs., Sonya Redbird of Washington at 148 lbs., Courteney Tompkins of California at 172 lbs. and Torey Barrett of California at 198 lbs.
