BONO, GARDNER, MCMANN NAMED OUTSTANDING WRESTLERS AT THE SUNKIST KIDS/ASU INTERNATIONAL OPEN IN PHOENIX, ARIZ.Many of the top wrestlers in the United States, along with some talented foreign athletes, competed at the 15th annual Sunkist Kids/ASU International Open, held at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, Ariz., Oct. 30-31.
Claiming the Outstanding Wrestler awards in their respective styles were Chris Bono (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) in men's freestyle, Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in men's Greco-Roman and Sara McMann (Marion, N.C./Sunkist Kids) in women's freestyle.
Bono defeated veteran Terry Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel), 4-0 in the finals at 152 pounds. Bono is currently ranked No. 3 in the USA, while Steiner holds a No. 5 national ranking. It was Bono's third straight Sunkist Kids/ASU Open title.
Gardner defeated 1999 U.S. World team member Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), by a 2-2, overtime referee's decision at 286 pounds. Gardner was fifth in the 1997 World Championships, while Byers placed sixth in the 1999 World Championships. It was Gardner's third straight Sunkist Kids/ASU Open title, and a rematch of the 1998 finals, won by Gardner, 3-1.
McMann won a wild shootout in the 123.25-pound finals, stopping Malissa Sherwood (Rocklin, Calif./Dave Schultz WC), 14-13. Both wrestlers entered the season with No. 2 national rankings, with Sherwood at 112.25 pounds and McMann at 123.25 pounds.
In freestyle, 1993 World Champion Melvin Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) returned to action after a year off, winning the 213.75-pound class with a 2-2 overtime referee's decision over Johnny Curtis (Manassas, Va./Dave Schultz WC). Douglas, a 1996 Olympian, did not compete during the 1998-99 season, but has returned for another attempt at the Olympic team.
Other individual freestyle champions from the United States included Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 119 pounds, Dwight Hinson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds, Troy Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel) at 138.75 pounds, Brian Dolph (Ridley Park, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) at 167.5 pounds and Tolly Thompson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds.
The lone foreign champion at the 1999 Sunkist Kids/ASU International Open was Justin Abdou of Canada, who defeated 1999 NCAA champion Cael Sanderson (Heber City, Utah/Sunkist Kids) in the finals at 187.25 pounds.
In Greco-Roman, claiming a Sunkist Kids/ASU Open title for the second straight year was Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), who defeated Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in the 138.75-pound finals, 8-1. Gruenwald, ranked No. 2 in the nation at 127.75 pounds, moved up a weight class and beat Nieradka, ranked No. 2 in the USA at 138.75 pounds.
Jason Gleasman (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, claimed the 213.75-pound title, defeating 1999 Junior World Champion Garrett Lowney (Appleton, Wis./Minnesota Storm) in the finals, 2-0 in overtime.
Other Greco-Roman champions were Joey Dansby (San Luis Obispo, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 119 pounds, Duaine Martin (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 127.75 pounds, Shon Lewis (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 152 pounds, T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 167.5 pounds and Kenny Owens (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 187.25 pounds.
The women's freestyle division had a large turnout, and was very competitive this year. Leading the field was 112.25-pound champion Stephanie Murata (Boca Raton, Fla./Sunkist Kids), who defeated Misato Shimuzu of Japan, in the finals, 4-1. Murata was fourth in the 1998 and 1999 World Championships,
Other individual women champions were Patricia Miranda (Stanford, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 101.25 pounds, Megan Andrews (Napa, Calif./Cowboy WC) at 136.5 pounds, Kaci Lyle (Eureka, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 149.75 pounds and Sarah Van Skaik (Willamsburg, Ky./Cumberland College) at 165.25 pounds.
All three U.S. colleges with varsity women's wrestling teams participated in the meet: Univ. of Minnesota-Morris, Missouri Valley College and Cumberland College. Although they did not have an individual champion, Missouri Valley placed a strong second in the team standings.
The Sunkist Kids won the team title in men's freestyle, the New York AC won the team title in men's Greco-Roman and the Dave Schultz WC won the team title in women's freestyle.
