IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE STATE OF IOWA
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, DAN GABLE IS CONSIDERED THE "BABE RUTH" OF HIS SPORT. HIS WRESTLING CAREER HAS TAKEN ON AN ALMOST FOLKLORE QUALITY AND HIS DOMINATION AS A COLLEGIATE COACH HAS BEEN UNMATCHED IN HISTORY; AND
WHEREAS, THIS IOWA NATIVE WON 181 CONSECUTIVE WRESTLING MATCHES, GOING UNDEFEATED THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE BEFORE LOSING IN THE NCAA FINALS HIS SENIOR YEAR; AND
WHEREAS, AS A WRESTLER AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY, GABLE WAS A TWO-TIME NCAA CHAMPION, THREE-TIME ALL-AMERICAN, AND THREE-TIME BIG TEN CHAMPION; AND
WHEREAS, GABLE EARNED NATIONAL FAME IN 1972 WHEN HE WON A GOLD MEDAL AT THE OLYMPICS IN MUNICH. ON HIS WAY TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP, GABLE DID NOT SURRENDER A SINGLE POINT TO HIS OPPONENTS. THIS ACHIEVEMENT HAS NEVER BEEN ACCOMPLISHED BY ANY OTHER OLYMPIC WRESTLER; AND
WHEREAS, IN ADDITION TO GABLE'S OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL, HE ALSO WON THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES, THE TBILISI TOURNAMENT, AND THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AFTER COMPLETING HIS COLLEGIATE CAREER. IN 1980, GABLE WAS NAMED TO THE USA WRESTLING HALL OF FAME AND IN 1985, WAS NAMED TO THE OLYMPIC HALL OF FAME; AND
WHEREAS, COACHING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA, GABLE'S HAWKEYES NEVER LOST A BIG TEN TITLE AND WON THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP 15 TIMES OVER HIS 21 YEAR CAREER; AND
WHEREAS, DURING DAN GABLE'S DOMINANT COACHING CAREER, HE COACHED 152 ALL-AMERICANS, 45 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, 106 BIG TEN CHAMPIONS, AND FOUR OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALISTS. THE HAWKEYES ALSO HELD THE LONGEST STRETCH OF NATIONAL TEAM TITLES IN ANY SPORT, WINNING NINE CONSECUTIVE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS FROM 1978-1986; AND
WHEREAS, SINCE HIS RETIREMENT, GABLE IS NOW COACHING OLYMPIC-BOUND WRESTLERS AND SERVING AS ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA; AND
WHEREAS, ON NOVEMBER 14, 1999, A DOCUMENTARY PRODUCED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA VIDEO CENTER AND SHADOW BIRD PRODUCTIONS WILL AIR NATIONALLY ON HBO SIGNATURE ENTITLED FREESTYLE: THE VICTORIES OF DAN GABLE.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, THOMAS J. VILSACK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF IOWA, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM NOVEMBER 14, 1999, AS
DAN GABLE DAY
IN IOWA TO HONOR THIS OUTSTANDING CITIZEN
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I HAVE HEREUNTO SUBSCRIBED MY NAME AND CAUSED THE GREAT SEAL OF THE STATE OF IOWA TO BE AFFIXED. DONE AT DES MOINES THIS 7TH DAY OF NOVEMBER IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ONE THOUSAND NINE HUNDRED NINETY-NINE.
