PANAMA CITY, Panama – The United States had three medalists and placed third in the team standings at the Pan American Championships in women’s freestyle on Saturday.

Winning a gold medal for the United States was Sarah Hildebrandt (Granger, Ind./King College) at 55 kg/121 lbs., who defeated Yessica Oviedo Perez of Dominican Republic, 2-1, 5-0 in the finals.

She beat Nesmarie Rodriguez Tirado of Puerto Rico and Yamilka Del Valle Alvarez of Cuba on the way to the finals.

Hildebrandt was a 2012 WCWA college national champion for King College and was second in 2013.

Taking a silver medal was Brittney Roberts (Santa Fe, Texas/OKCU Gator RTC) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Roberts won her first two bouts, beating Vanessa Torres Batista of Dominican Republic and University World silver medalist Erica Wiebe of Canada. In the finals, she was edged by Lisset Hechavarria Medina of Cuba, 0-3, 0-1.

Roberts was second in the 2013 WCWA college nationals for Oklahoma City and third in 2012.

Coming home with a bronze medal was Julia Salata (Canton, Mich./New York AC/King College) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. Salata beat Elsa Sanchez of Dominican Republic with a third-period pin to win her bronze-medal bout.

Salata won a Special Wrestle-off in Oklahoma City last week to earn her spot on this team. She was a member of both the FILA Junior World Team and the University World Team last year. She has also been second and fourth in the last two WCWA college nationals for King College.

"We came in here with a very young team and the women competed well and gained some very valuable experience. I am excited and pleased with the direction of our program. This will be a building block for Team USA. Our focus now turns to Las Vegas and the U.S. Open," said National Women's Coach Terry Steiner.

Canada won the team title with 59 points, led by three individual champions : World champion Jessica MacDonald at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., World medalist Justine Bouchard at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Stacie Anaka at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.
