Binghamton’s Vinson, Hofstra’s Anspach, ODU’s Mecate Honored for 2012-13 CAA Wrestling Awards

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—For the second consecutive season, Donnie Vinson of Binghamton University has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestler of the Year in a vote by the CAA coaches.
Hofstra University head coach Rob Anspach was named the CAA Coach of the Year.
Chris Mecate of Old Dominion University was named the CAA Rookie of the Year.
Vinson, a senior 149 from Marathon, NY (Whitney Point), was the CAA Championships Most Outstanding Wrestler, winning by fall in the semifinals and by tech fall in the finals.
A third seed at Nationals, Vinson went 4-2 at the NCAA Championships to finish the season with a record of 37-5.
Anspach won his second CAA Championship in as many years at Hofstra. The Pride won eight straight CAA Titles before Binghamton won in 2010.
Hofstra’s schedule this year included three teams ranked in the top five in the nation and 11 top 25 teams.
Mecate, a freshman 141 from Highland, California (Redlands East Valley), won all three of his matches to win a CAA title and was a 12th seed at Nationals. Mecate won a first round bout at the NCAAs before losing to the fifth and 11th seeds. Mecate finished his first collegiate season with a 36-11 record.
