Roberts named Outstanding Wrestler at Women’s University Nationals in Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Competing on her home mats, Brittney Roberts of the OKCU/Gator RTC won the gold medal at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 2013 University Women’s Nationals held at Oklahoma City University on Saturday.

Winners in the seven World Championship weights earned a spot on the 2013 U.S. University World Team, which will compete in the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, July 10-16.

Roberts defeated her longtime rival in college and on the Senior level, Julia Salata of the NYAC/King College in the championship finals, 7-0, 2-0. Salata defeated Roberts in the finals of the 2012 University Nationals.

Winning her second straight University Nationals title was Victoria Anthony of the Sunkist Kids, who stopped Erin Golston of the NYAC, 6-0, 3-0 in the finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. Anthony was a two-time Junior World champion, while Golston won two Junior World bronze medals. Anthony was the only repeat champion from last year

The champion at 59 kg/130 lbs. was two-time Junior World bronze medalist Alli Ragan of the NYAC/King College, who defeatedTiffany Sluik of Jamestown College, 3-0, 1-0. Ragan won the University Nationals in 2011 as well.

In a battle of two U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) resident athletes at 63 kg/138.5 lbs Jennifer Page of the Titan Mercury WC defeated Erin Clodgo of the Sunkist Kids, 0-1, 3-0, 1-0. Page competed at Oklahoma City University as a college freshman.

Two other USOTC athletes claimed individual titles: Candace Workman of the OTC at 51 kg/ 112 lbs. and  Veronica Carlson (NYAC) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.

Workman pinned Savanna Nobile of Lindenwood, in the finals, 3-1,1:37. She was also a University Nationals champion at 48 kg in 2011.

Carlson, a past Junior World silver medalist, scored a technical fall over Stephanie Geltmacher of the OKCU/Gator RTC, 6-0, 7-0 in the finals.

In a battle of college stars at 55 kg/121 lbs., Sarah Hildebrandt of King defeated Brieana Delgado of OKCU/Gator RTC, 0-1, 5-0, 2-0, giving King College two athletes on the University World Team.

In a weight class which will not be competed at the University Worlds, the champion at 77 kg/169.75 lbs. was Tonya Keegan of the Lock Haven Univ. Lady Eagles WC), who beat Mary Westman of the Jimmie Wrestling Club, 1-0, 1-0 in the finals.
