RUSSIA DEFEATS UNITED STATES, 30-15, IN FREESTYLE EXHIBITION DUAL MEET AT FORT CARSON, COLO., THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11 

The national team from Russia defeated a team of local U.S. freestyle wrestling stars, 30-15, in an exhibition dual meet at Fort Carson, Colo. on Thursday, Nov. 11. The dual meet was held at the U.S. Army Post Fieldhouse.

Russia won eight of the 12 matches contested, including the first three matches of the evening.

Winning matches for the United States were Jason Kutz (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 127.75 pounds, Brandon Slay (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 163 pounds, Dan St. John (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 187.25 pounds and Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds. Kutz wrestles for the host Army team, while Slay, St. John and Gardner are U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athletes.

Kutz defeated 1998 Goodwill Games bronze medalist Murad Ramazanov, 4-3, for the first U.S. win of the evening.

Slay edged Junior World medalist Chamile Aliev, 4-3.

St. John, a 1997 U.S. Nationals champion, scored a 3-3 overtime referee¹s decision over Vitaly Kaudriavcev.

Gardner, who was fifth in the 1997 World Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling, dominated Junior World Champion Artem Ashijev, 8-1.

The U.S. team was coached by 1992 Olympic Champion Kevin Jackson, USA Wrestling¹s Freestyle Resident Coach.

The Russian team was coached by two-time Olympic gold medalist Sergei Beloglazov and 1980 Olympic gold medalist Anatoly Beloglazov. Russia is the reigning World Team champion in freestyle wrestling and the athletes on this Russian team are among the best in their nation.
