SIX U.S. WRESTLERS WIN GOLD MEDALS AT CLANSMEN INTERNATIONAL AT VANCOUVER, CANADA, NOV. 13Six U.S. freesytle wrestlers claimed gold medals at the 1999 Clansmen International Open, held in Vancouver, Canada, Nov. 13.
The U.S. individual champions included Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 119 pounds, Yero Washington (Clovis, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds; Troy Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel) at 138.75 pounds, Sean Bormet (Ann Arbor, Mich./Cliff Keen WC) at 167.5 pounds, Joel Sharratt (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 213.75 pounds and Tolly Thompson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds.
For Abas, it was the third gold medal of the fall wrestling season, to go along with titles at the Sunkist Kids/ASU International Open in Phoenix, Ariz. and the Winter Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Five U.S. wrestlers won silver medals. In the men's division, silver medals went to 1998 World Champion Sammie Henson (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds, plus Chris Bono (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 152 pounds, Scott Norton (Eugene, Ore./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds and Lee Fullhart (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye) at 213.75 pounds. Henson is competing up one weight class from his normal 119 pounds.
In the women's division, Megan Andrews (Stillwater, Okla./Peninsula Grapplers) won the silver medal at 136.5 pounds.
Four U.S. athletes won bronze medals, including men wrestlers Shawn Charles (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sunkist Kids) at 152 pounds and Chad Lamer (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 213.75 pounds and women wrestlers Julie Gonzales (Vallejo, Calif./Peninsula Grapplers) at 101.25 pounds and Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) at 123.25 pounds.
U.S. club teams did well in the team race. In the men's division, the Sunkist Kids placed second, the Hawkeye WC was third, Team Excel was fourth and the Cliff Keen WC was sixth. In the women's division, the Peninsula Grapplers placed fourth.
