On Feb. 12, 2013 the wrestling world was in shock as it learned the executive board of the International Olympic Committee took a vote that resulted in the recommendation of wrestling being removed from the list of core sports at the 2020 Olympic games.
The reaction from the general public was overwhelmingly positive in support of wrestling. People flooded social media outlets to express thoughts and concerns about this vote by the IOC, even so much that the hashtag #SaveOlympicWrestling was trending on Twitter nearly all of Feb. 12.
In quick response to the IOC vote, USA Wrestling created a Facebook page titled Keep Wrestling in the Olympics, which received tremendous fan support amassing over 60 thousand “Likes†within 24 hours of the page’s creation.
Fans of the page have been extremely active in not only voicing their opinions, but posting many keep Olympic wrestling photos, videos, articles, petitions and even songs dedicated to keeping wrestling in the Olympic games.
On March 13, just one month after the IOC vote, the Keep Wrestling in the Olympics Facebook page surpassed 100 thousand “Likes,†a testament to wrestling community for its continued support of Olympic wrestling.
USA Wrestling would ask that you continue to share this page in order to drive the numbers as high as possible before the upcoming IOC meetings that will determine the fate of wrestling in the Olympics.
In addition, members of USA Wrestling and the Committee for the Preservation of Olympic Wrestling (CPOW) have created a new Twitter handle dedicated to the cause of keeping Olympic wrestling. The Twitter handle is @wrestlingvision and is under the name KeepOlympicWrestling.
Follow @wrestlingvision for continued updates on the Olympic wrestling situation and use the hashtag #KeepOlympicWrestling when Tweeting information pertinent to this cause.
Updates will continue to be provided through these respective social media outlets as well as keepwrestlingintheolympics.com, until a decision is made by the IOC.
