U.S. TEAM TO COMPETE IN HENRI DEGLANE CHALLENGE IN NICE, FRANCE, NOV. 27-28 

A team of talented U.S. freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers will compete in the 1999 Henri Deglane Challenge in Nice, France, Nov. 27-28. This international competition will feature top athletes from a variety of nations in both styles.

In the past, the Henri Deglane Challenge was conducted in a dual meet format. This year, however, it will be held as an individual tournament.

The U.S. team will be coached by USA Wrestling's Freestyle Resident Coach Kevin Jackson of Colorado Springs, Colo. Jackson was a 1992 Olympic gold medalist and won World gold medals in 1991 and 1995.

A number of freestyle national team members will participate in the Henri Deglane Challenge, led by 1999 World Team member Dominic Black (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 213.75 pounds. Black was a 1999 Pan American Games champion and 1995 World Cup champion.

Two freestyle wrestlers who are currently ranked No. 2 in the USA in their weight classes will also participate: Pat Santoro (Bethlehem, Pa./New York AC) at 152 pounds and Steve Marianetti (Urbana, Ill./New York AC) at 167.5 pounds. Santoro was second in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Marianetti competed in the 1998 World Championships and was a 1998 Goodwill Games silver medalist.

Two other freestyle wrestlers with No. 3 national rankings will also participate: Kerry Boumans (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 138.75 pounds and Mike Van Arsdale (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 213.75 pounds. Boumans is competing up one weight class from his normal 127.75-pound class.

Six Greco-Roman wrestlers will also compete for the U.S. team, led by veteran Mike Ellsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 152 pounds. Three members of the U.S. Olympic Education Center resident team in Marquette, Mich. will participate on the tour.

In addition to the tournament, the U.S. team may compete in exhibition dual meets with foreign nations.
