Cornell seems ready to bring home its seventh straight EIWA Championships, a record winning streak in college wrestling’s oldest conference which has more than a century of history.
Rob Koll’s Big Red has 126.5 points after the session, followed by Navy in second with 109.5 points. This 17 point lead is larger than it had coming into the morning. Rounding out the top five after the morning session are Penn in third with 101.5 points, Rutgers in fourth with 86 points and Lehigh in fifth with 85.5 points.
Both Cornell and Navy have three finalists. Cornell has five more wrestlers who could score points in the other medal matches, while Navy only has four others who could add to the team total.
This session featured the consolation semifinals and the seventh-place matches. Cornell entered the round with all 10 wrestlers in action, the only team who did not lose an athlete in Friday’s competition.
The last session starting at 3:00 p.m. ET will feature the first, third and fifth place matches. Seventh place matches were contested in the morning session.
The big story of this session is the placements of wrestlers in regards to NCAA Championships. Each weight class has a different allocation, based upon performance at that weight during the season. The EIWA has earned 45 automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Championships, behind only the Big Ten in the number of qualifiers.
In some cases, the matches in the morning session placed athletes in position for an automatic qualification to the NCAAs. The weight which qualified the most for the NCAAs is 141 pounds, which has an allocation of seven athletes. All of those seven were set during this session. However, many other NCAA berths are still up for grabs in the final session.
Two team points have been deducted from American University, based upon penalties incurred by its coaching staff on the mat.
