MINSK, Belarus – World and Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs won a gold medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. on the first day of the Alexander Medved International on Friday.
Burroughs won five matches on the way to the gold medal, defeating Dmitry Rochnyak of Ukraine in the finals.
He opened with a victory over American teammate Colt Sponseller in the first round. In order, Burroughs knocked off Ablaikhan Mursultanov of Kazakhstan, Andri Nagornyi of Ukraine and Magomed Zubairov of Russia in a row to qualify for the finals.
Burroughs, the 2011 World champion and 2012 Olympic champion, remains unbeaten in his career on the Senior level in freestyle, running his record to an amazing 48-0 since coming on the scene after his college career ended in the spring of 2011.
Capturing a silver medal for the USA at 60 kg/132 lbs. was Jimmy Kennedy, a 2012 University World Team member. Kennedy fell to Rustam Abdurashidov of Russia in the finals to earn silver. He won his first four matches against Dyulsultan Basov of Russia, Nikolai Noev of Tajikistan, Mikola Solodnjuk of Slovakia and Nyurtyn Skryadin of Russia.
Sponseller, a 2012 World University bronze medalist, rebounded from his loss to Burroughs to place fifth. He followed the loss with two wins against Ablaikhan Mursultanov of Kazakhstan and Andri Nagomyi of the Ukraine. He lost the bronze medal match against Magomed Zubairov of Russia.
The final three weight classes in men’s freestyle, 84 kg/185 lbs., 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and 120 kg/264.5 lbs., will compete on Saturday to finish the Medved International tournament.
