Russia defeats Iran to win gold at Greco-Roman World Cup in Tehran, Iran

TEHRAN, Iran – Russia beat defending champion Iran 5-2 on their home mat in Tehran, Iran as the 2013 Greco-Roman World Cup concluded today.
Among the winners for Team Russia in the dual were 2012 Olympic gold medalist and 2011 World champion Roman Vlasov, who beat Fashad Alizadeh at 74 kg and 2011 World bronze medalist Bekhan Mankiev beat Mohsen Haji at 55 kg. Although losing as a team, Iran’s Taleb Nematpour had a big win when he defeated Russian star, 2004 Olympic gold medalist and 2007 World champion Aleksej Mishin, at 84 kg.
Taking third place at the World Cup was Turkey, which defeated Armenia 6-1. Top athletes on the mat for Turkey were two-time World champion Selcuk Cebi, who defeated Armenia’s Hrach Hovannisyan at 84 kg, and 2012 Olympian and 2011 World bronze medalist Cenk Ildem, who beat Sargis Tonoyan at 96 kg.
The fifth place team was Kazakhstan, winning 7-0 over Korea. Leading Kazakhstan to its win were 2012 Olympians and World medalists Nurmakhan Tinaliyev, who defeated Yong-Min Kim at 120 kg, and Almat Kebispayev, who defeated Seung-Jae Woo at 60 kg.
Seventh place at this year’s Cup went to Azerbaijan, which defeated Belarus 6-1. On Team Azerbaijan was two-time Olympian Shalva Gadabadze at 96 kg, who defeated Belarus’s Siarhei Staradub. Two-time Junior World champion Eldaniz Azizli defeated Elbek Tazhyieu at 55 kg for Azerbaijan.
Ninth place went to Hungary, which defeated Bulgaria 4-3. 2012 Junior World champion Balint Lam defeated Ivan Ivanov at 120 kg, helping lead Hungary to the slim margin of victory.
