Waters Recognized as Sixth Mizzou Wrestler of Week by MAC For the sixth time this season, the Mid-American Conference has awarded the Wrestler of the Week honor to a Missouri Tiger. This past week, No. 4-ranked Alan Waters joins a list of four other Tigers to receive the honor in Mizzou’s inaugural season as a member of the MAC Conference. Waters, a junior from Kansas City, Mo., won two matches this past weekend both by major decision at the NWCA Cliff Keen National Duals Midwestern Regional. Waters started off the day with an 11-2 major decision over Shane Gentry of Maryland. The 125-pounder found many ways to score in his match against Gentry as he connected on two takedowns, a couple of 2-point nearfalls, a reversal, and an extra point for 2:25 of riding time. Waters added his second major of the day with a drubbing against No. 16 Camden Eppert of Purdue, 15-3. The junior added five more takedowns as well as a 3-point nearfall as time expired to get his 23rd win of the year. Of the 13 weekly honors that the MAC has handed out, the Tigers have claimed six this season. Waters joins a list of Tigers that includes No. 1 Dom Bradley (Nov. 21, Jan. 10), Nathan McCormick (Dec. 19), Drake Houdashelt (Jan. 30), and Todd Porter (Feb. 6). Waters was a three-time Wrestler of the Week winner last season in Missouri’s last year as a member of the Big 12 Conference. Waters is a perfect 23-0 on the season and has been a rock as the Mizzou leadoff man. He's ranked No. 1 by WrestlingReport and is in the top-4 in every other poll. As a junior, he boasts an incredible .892 win percentage with a 91-11 career record. Cameron Neiss of Montana State-Northern has been named the NAIA National Wrestler of the Week Cameron Neiss of Montana State-Northern has been named the NAIA National Wrestler of the Week, announced Wednesday by the national office. Neiss was selected based on his performances from Feb. 11 - 17 and is the final honoree of 2013. Neiss, a native of Ronan, Mont., was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament after going 3-0 en route to an individual crown and an automatic berth to the 2013 NAIA Wrestling National Championships at the NAIA West Qualifying Group Tournament on Feb. 16. The junior, who was seeded fourth at 133 pounds, opened the event with an 18-2 technical fall over Mason Saldana of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). Neiss continued his run with a 10-8 victory over then-No. 1 Prescott Garner of Southern Oregon in the semifinals before knocking off second-ranked Angel Garcia of Menlo (Calif.), 4-2, in the finals. Gray, a senior insulator apprentice from Pittsburgh, Penn., went 3-0 last weekend in his first action in a month after returning from injury. He started his weekend winning at 235 pounds in a dual match against Penn State DuBois by a fall in 2:55. On Saturday, he won a pair of matches to claim the 235 pound bracket at the USCAA National Invitational hosted at Penn State University. Both matches were by fall in the first period winning in 53 seconds and the final in 1:47. The tournament title was the first in his career. For the year, Gray is 18-7 with 11 wins by fall. The Builders are now off until March 2 when they compete in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Mid-Atlantic Conference Championships at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Vir. UVU's Jade Rauser Named WWC Wrestler of the Week Utah Valley University redshirt freshman Jade Rauser (Townsend, Mont./Broadwater HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after upsetting No. 8 Josh Martinez of Air Force last week. The conference award was announced Tuesday by the league. Rauser had UVU's biggest win in its conference victory over Air Force last Saturday as he defeated the top-10 ranked Martinez, 6-5. The Wolverine redshirt freshman kept the score close against Martinez and gave himself the chance to win as he trailed Martinez by one in the closing seconds of the final period. Just before the clock hit zero, Rauser managed to pick up a reversal to win by a point. Not only did the Wolverine redshirt freshman get the reversal just before time expired but also just before Martinez gained 1:00 of riding time as Rauser scored the reversal with the riding time clock showing a 59-second advantage for Martinez. The win gave Utah Valley a 3-0 lead over the Falcons (ranked 22nd in last week's InterMat poll), a lead that it would not relinquish the rest of the night as it went on to defeat AFA 23-9 in the Wolverines' regular season finale. Rauser, who went from being unranked by InterMat to No. 18 this morning, finished his regular season with a 19-6 overall record and a 6-1 mark in duals. The conference honor is Rauser's second of the season and second of his career after he shared honors with Air Force's Dylan Hyder on Jan. 22. Utah Valley finished in third-place in the WWC dual standings with the victory with a 3-2 record. Over the weekend, North Dakota State also clinched its first-ever WWC title as it completed its conference season with an unblemished 5-0 mark. The Western Wrestling Conference, which is in its seventh year of competition, is comprised of six schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming. The weekly honor is the third of Ramos’ career, and first this season. The 2012 All-American earned the honor following his 9-0 major decision over third-ranked A.J. Schopp of Edinboro. Ramos, ranked No. 2 nationally at 133 pounds, scored two takedowns, two nearfall points, one reversal and piled up 1:26 of riding time to improve to 20-0 this season. He is 4-0 against ranked opponents, and has scored bonus points in 18 of his 20 wins, including nine pins, eight major decisions and one technical fall. The Hawkeyes have earned Big Ten weekly honors five times this season, more than any other school. Sophomore Nick Moore earned Big Ten honors Jan. 29, junior Derek St. John was recognized Dec. 11, and senior Matt McDonough has been honored on two occasions, Nov. 20 and Feb. 5. The Hawkeyes (19-1, 8-0) return to the mat this weekend at the NWCA National Dual Meet Championships in Minneapolis. Competition begins Friday at 6 p.m. (CT). The tournament will be broadcast live on AM 800 KXIC, and streamed online at hawkeyesports.com via Hawkeye All-Access. Yates Named ACC Wrestler Of The Week Virginia Tech redshirt senior Pete Yates has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week for the third time this season after defeating the nation’s fourth-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds and leading the seventh-ranked Hokies to wins over fellow nationally ranked teams in the first two rounds of the NWCA National Duals last weekend at Corvallis, Ore. The fifth-ranked Yates avenged his lone loss of the season in big fashion with a 7-2 win over fourth-ranked Bubby Graham of Oklahoma as the Hokies won two matches at the Oregon State Regional of the National Duals. Yates fell behind early, but got a takedown in the second period and three near fall points late as the Hokies rolled past No. 25 Oklahoma, 33-6. In Tech’s 20-15 win over No. 9 Oregon State, Yates dominated with a 15-0 technical fall win over Seth Thomas as the Hokies won the regional and advanced to the finals of the NWCA National Duals, which are set to be held in Minneapolis this Friday and Saturday. Mason’s Flournoy CAA Wrestler of Week Greg Flournoy of George Mason University is the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week for all competition February 12-18. Chris Mecate of Old Dominion University is the CAA Rookie of the Week. Flournoy, a red-shirt freshman from Washington, VA (Fauquier), upset the second ranked 149 in the CAA and the 30th ranked 149 in the nation from Old Dominion by a 5-1 score. Unranked in the CAA, Flournoy collected his second CAA win and his 13th overall victory. Mecate, a freshman 141 from Highland, Calif. (Redlands East Valley), won a CAA dual against George Mason to remain undefeated (4-0) in the CAA. His eight-match winning streak brings his record to 33-8 and is ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News, 16th by InterMat. David Demo Named NSIC Wrestler of the Week The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced that junior David Demo has been name the NSIC wrestler of the week. Demo went 2-0 on the week, including a 6-0 victory of St. Cloud State's Eric Forde. Forde is the third-ranked wrestler at 125-lbs. Demo was also victorious the following night as he defeated Northern State's Anthony Bruno 5-0. The Bozeman, Mont., native finished the regular season with a 19-10 overall record and went 7-1 in NSIC action. This marks the second time that a Maverick has been honored as the wrestler of the week, as sophomore Drew Lexvold won the award the week of Jan. 28 and is the second time in that Demo has garnered the award in his career. No. 8 Minnesota State (10-3, 7-1) will travel to Waterloo, Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 24 to compete in NCAA Super Region #3. MSU will be joined by fellow NSIC foes St. Cloud State, Augustana, Southwest Minnesota State, Northern State, U-Mary, MSU Moorhead, Minot State and host Upper Iowa. Along with Indianapolis, UW-Parkside, Maryville and Newman with the top four wrestlers from each weight class advancing to the NCAA DII Wrestling Championships on March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala. Mitchell Port honored by EWL, PSAC Edinboro University’s Mitchell Port (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte Area) was one of two Fighting Scots to pick up wins in Saturday’s match at second-ranked Iowa. For his efforts the sophomore was named the EWL Wrestler of the Week and was selected the PSAC Co-Wrestler of the Week, sharing the honor with Bloomsburg’s Josh Roosa. Port improved to 26-3 with his 11th straight win, a 5-0 decision over Mark Ballweg at 141 lbs. He came in ranked fifth by both InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News while Ballweg was eighth and seventh, respectively. In handing Ballweg just his second loss of the year (the other to second-ranked Hunter Stieber of Ohio State by a 6-4 decision), Port opened the scoring in the second period with two near-fall points while riding out Ballweg. In the third period he reversed Ballweg for two more points and picked up a point for riding time. Edinboro is back in action on Friday, Feb. 22 hosting Pittsburgh in the final home dual of the season.
