Carlson wins bronze on final day of Ukrainian Memorial International in Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine –Veronica Carlson (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) won a bronze medal at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. on the final day of the Outstanding Ukrainian Memorial International on Sunday.
Carlson, a past Junior World silver medalist, had a strong 3-1 record, including a victory over Svitlana Ryzhykova of Ukraine, 1-0, 0-1, 3-0 in the bronze-medal match.
She opened with a win over Olga Korolchuk of Ukraine, 2-0, 0-1, 6-0. She was pinned in the next bout in the second period by Alina Stadnik of Ukraine. When Stadnik reached the finals, Carlson was pulled back into the repechage. Her first repechage win over Kristine Odrina-Urbova of Latvia by a 2-0, 6-0 margin placed her in the bronze-medal round.
The other U.S. athlete competing on Sunday, Shauna Isbell (Flagstaff, Ariz./Lindenwood University) fell short of the medals at 59 kg/130 lbs. with a 1-2 record.
Over the two day event, the five-athlete U.S. team came home with four medals, including two golds and two bronzes. The two U.S. champions on Saturday were 2012 World silver medalist Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and 2012 World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
