Lampe, Maroulis win women’s freestyle golds at Ukrainian Memorial International in Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine – The United States won a pair of gold medals in women’s freestyle on the opening day of the Outstanding Ukrainian Memorial International on Saturday.

Claiming gold medals were 2012 World silver medalist Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and 2012 World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.

Maroulis won three matches, two by fall. She opened with a pin over Katsiaryna Hanchar of Belarus in the second period. In the semifinals, she stopped Emese Barka of Hungary, 1-1, 3-1. Her gold medal win came over Tetiana Omelchenko of Ukraine by pin in 1:36.

Lampe also had three wins on the way to gold. She opened with a win over American Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Sunkist Kids), 2-2, 4-1, 3-0. Her semifinal win was over Mariana Bezruka of Ukraine, 3-1, 3-0

Lampe finished off with a technical fall in the finals over Elena Vostrikova of Russia, 6-0, 7-0.

Anthony rebounded after the loss to Lampe with two wins and captured the bronze medal. She beat a pair of Ukrainian opponents, Natalya Pulkovska, 1-0, 7-4 in the repechage, then got a first-period pin over Marian Bezruka (Ukraine) in the bronze-medal bout.

Two more U.S. wrestlers compete on Sunday, and have received their draws.
