U.S. ARMY WRESTLERS BYERS, SANTOS WIN GOLD MEDALS AT DEVATAEV TOURNAMENT IN RUSSIA, DEC. 3-5Two members of the U.S. Army wrestling team, Michel Santos at 119 pounds and Dremiel Byers at 286 pounds, won gold medals at the Devataev Tournament of Greco-Roman wrestling in Saransk, Russia, Dec. 3-5. The U.S. Army team is stationed at Fort Carson, Colo.
Byers was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, winning all four of his matches. Byers is currently ranked No. 1 in the USA at his weight class, and placed sixth in the 1999 World Championships.
Santos had perhaps the best performance of his career, winning five matches on the way to the gold-medal.
Placing second at 213.75 pounds was Jason Loukides, who had a 2-1 record during the tournament.
Two U.S. Army wrestlers won bronze medals: Keith Sieracki at 167.5 pounds and Josh Hall at 213.75 pounds. Placing fourth for the Army were Glenn Nieradka at 138.75 pounds and Shon Lewis at 152 pounds.
The tournament featured Russian club teams from the cities of Saransk, Kazan, Samara and others. The U.S. Army team competed in this tournament during a December training and competition tour to Russia.
