Keck wins gold, Bosch and Hicks take silvers at Vaanta Cup in Finland

KECK WINS GOLD, BOSCH AND HICKS CLAIM SILVERS AT VAANTA CUP AT VAANTA, FINLAND, DEC. 11-12 

Brian Keck (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) claimed a gold medal at 286 pounds, the top U.S. performance at the Vaanta Cup in Vaanta, Finland, Dec. 11-12.

Keck won four straight matches on the way to the title, including a 1-0 overtime referee's decision over Helger Hallik of Estonia in the gold-medal match. It was the top international performance of Keck's career.

Two U.S. wrestlers won silver medals, Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Marine Corps) at 187.25 pounds and Dan Hicks (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 213.75 pounds.

Bosch won his first three matches to qualify for the gold-medal finals, where he was defeated by Levon Kizevadze of Russia, in a heartbreaking 6-5 overtime match. A key win for Bosch came over veteran Tomi Rajamaki of Finland in the semifinals, 3-2.

Hicks also claimed his first three matches to advance to the gold-medal finals, where he lost to talented Petru Sudureac of Romania, 3-1.

James Shillow (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) won a bronze medal at 138.75 pounds with a 4-1 record. He scored an injury default victory in the third-place match against teammate Duaine Martin (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps).

A group of 20 U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers made up from the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Olympic Training Center competed in a pair of international tournaments; the Haparanda Cup in Sweden, Dec. 4-5, and the Vaanta Cup.

Three U.S. wrestlers placed fourth: Martin, plus two-time OlympianShawn Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 119 pounds and Ken Owens (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 187.25 pounds,

Corey Farkas (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) placed sixth at 286 pounds

The United States and the U.S. Marine Corps finished in a four-way tie for third place with Finland and Ukraine. Russia won the team title, followed by Romania.

The U.S. teams were coached by U.S. Marine Corps head coach Jay Antonelli of Quantico, Va. and U.S. Air Force head coach Rich Estrella of Colorado Springs, Colo.
