KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Three U.S. wrestlers have weighed in and received their first round draws for the 2013 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix, considered one of the world’s toughest freestyle wrestling meets. These U.S. athletes will compete on Saturday.
2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott (Stillwater, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) will open up against Rusam Abdurashidov of Russia in his opening match at 60 kg/132 lbs. Abdurashidov won the 2012 Ali Aliev Tournament in Russia. There are 32 wrestlers in his weight class. This is Scott’s first competition since winning his Olympic medal in London, England.
Two U.S. wrestlers are entered at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., which features 36 wrestlers.
2010 U.S. World Team member Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC) will face Tomotsugu Ishida of Japan in his opening bout. Ishida was a 2010 World University champion and a 2012 Asian bronze medalist.
Chase Pami (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) drew Azamatyi Pshnatlov of Russia, a 2010 Youth Olympic Games champion and 2010 European Cadet champion.
Also competing at 60 kg/132 lbs. is past NCAA champion Franklin Gomez, who competed for Michigan State, but now wrestles for Puerto Rico. Gomez, a 2011 World silver medalist, opens with Vladimir Flegontov of Russia.
The first day of action at the Yarygin Grand Prix began on Friday in both men’s freestyle and women’s freestyle wrestling, but no U.S. athletes are entered.
Weighing in on Saturday and competing on Sunday at 84 kg/185 lbs. is Freestyle Team USA member Keith Gavin (Columbus, Ohio/Lehigh Valley AC).
Only 10 U.S. athletes have ever won this event in men’s freestyle. The last American men’s freestyle champion was Steve Mocco in 2009. All 10 of the winners were Olympians during their career, with six winning Olympic medals and four winning Olympic gold medals.
