FILA ANNOUNCES A POSITIVE DOPING TEST FROM GRECO-ROMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR JAMSHIDI OF IRAN AT 85 KG; UNITED STATES GAINS OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION AT 85 KGFILA, the international wrestling federation, has announced a positive doping test from the 1999 Greco-Roman World Wrestling Championships held in Athens, Greece, Sept. 23-26.
Behrooz Jamshidi of Iran, who won a bronze medal at 85 kg (187.25 lbs.) is the athlete at fault. FILA has suspended Jamshidi for two years, until September 26, 2001, and the Iranian Wrestling Federation has received a reprimand.
In addition, Jamshidi's placement at the World Championships is eliminated, and the final results of the weight class has been re-ranked.
This adjustment is very important, because the 1999 World Championships was a qualification tournament for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The top eight athletes at each weight class qualified their nation to compete in the Olympics.
Quincey Clark (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm), who was originally ninth at the weight class in Athens, moves up one position to eighth place. Therefore, the United States has now qualified an athlete for the Sydney Olympics at 85 kg.
The United States has now qualified three weight classes for the Sydney Olympic Games in Greco-Roman: 85 kg (187.25 lbs.), 97 kg (213.75 lbs.) and 130 kg (286 lbs.).
Two more phases of Olympic qualification still remain. A series of Olympic Qualification Tournaments will be held all across the world from January-March 2000. The 2000 Continental Championships, scheduled for April and May of 2000, are the final qualifying events. The United States will attempt to qualify the remaining five weight classes in Greco-Roman through these events.
Ironically, it was Jamshidi who eliminated Clark at the Greco-Roman World Championships. During the round of 16, Jamshidi won a closely-contested 2-2 overtime referee's decision over Clark.
The re-ranking of the 85 kg weight class also adjusted the final team standings at the World Championships. The United States has now moved up into a tie for 14th in the final team standings. In the standings released during the event, the USA had been in a tie for 16th place. Iran, which lost the points earned by Jamshidi, dropped from a tie for 13th place to a tie for 23rd place.
