13th annual Colorado Springs Metro Championships to be held at Doherty High School, Jan. 25-26

Twenty-four Colorado Springs area high schools will come together at Doherty High School on January 25-26 for the 13th annual Front Range Orthopaedics 2013 Colorado Springs Metro Wrestling Championships.

All eyes will be on Pine Creek senior Geordan Martinez, ranked No. 1 in the state at138 lbs. in 5A, who is hoping to be the first four-time winner of the COS Metro Championships. Twelve athletes, including Martinez, have won this event three times.

The competition’s first session will kick off on Friday, January 25th at 4:30 p.m. and will continue at 9 a.m. Saturday morning with session 2. The Championship Finals are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening. 

Admission for adults is $10 for all day passes and $15 for an all tournament pass. Student admission prices are $5 for either an all day or an all tournament pass. 

The local high schools that are expected to compete in the tournament are: Air Academy, Colorado Springs Christian, Coronado, Deaf and Blind School, Discovery Canyon, Doherty, Falcon, Fountain-Fort Carson, Harrison, Lewis Palmer, Liberty, Manitou Springs, Mesa Ridge, Mitchell, Palmer, Palmer Ridge, Peyton, Pine Creek, Rampart, The Classical Academy, Vista Ridge, Wasson, Widefield and Woodland Park.

The 2012 Colorado Springs Metro Wrestling Champion and 2012 5A State Champion Pine Creek will attempt to defend their title. Pine Creek has won the event four times (2006, 2007, 2009, 2012). Other teams to win COS Metro titles are Widefield (2001, 2002, 2005), Coronado (2008, 2010, 2011) and Doherty (2003, 2004). 

The majority of 2012 Metro Champions are eligible to return to defend their titles, including Martinez, who was named last year’s Outstanding Underclassman, and  last year’s Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler A.J. Rees from Discovery Canyon, who is also ranked No. 1 in the state at 120-4A. 

Other returning champions, with their On The Mat state rankings, include No. 1 Trenton Watson (5A-106) from Coronado, No. 2 Steve Turner (4A-132) from Discovery Canyon, No. 7 Devin House (5A-132) from Coronado, No. 6 Derrick Ortiz (5A-145) from Pine Creek, No. 2 Alex Smith (5A-152) from Pine Creek, No. 4 Cody Soulka (4A-152) from Falcon, and No. 3 Adrian Mack (4A-170) from Discovery Canyon. 

There are several returning COS Metro runners-up including, No. 14 Brandon Poulos (4A-126) from Liberty (formerly at Vista Ridge), No. 2 Adrian Cordova (5A-120) from Coronado, No. 10 Chris Cos (5A-132) from Pine Creek, No. 9 Tyler Thalhammer (4A-138) from Palmer Ridge, No. 6 Kyle Soulka (4A-160) from Falcon, and No. 6 Jacob Schoenberger (5A-220) from Fountain-Fort Carson.

In this year’s tournament there are over 80 state ranked individual wrestlers. State ranked teams include No. 3 Discovery Canyon (4A), No. 3 Coronado (5A) and No.7 Pine Creek (5A), in the most recent On The Mat rankings.

Individual medals will be given to the 1st through 8th place winners in each weight class and the top four teams will receive team awards. An Outstanding Wrestler will be named for lower and upper weights. There will also be an Outstanding Underclassman, a senior named Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year and Manager of the Year.

The Event finals and semifinals will be webcast live on TheMat.com (www.themat.com).

USA Wrestling’s national staff organizes and conducts this tournament on an annual basis as a service to the Colorado Springs area wrestling community.
