Grand View continues reign at No. 1 in NAIA Coaches' Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the fourth-consecutive week and ninth time in the last 10 polls, Grand View (Iowa) obtained the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Wrestling Coaches' Top 20 Poll., the NAIA announced Wednesday. The Vikings totaled 150 points in the fourth edition of the poll with 12 ranked wrestlers, including one top-ranked individual in their respective weight class.
Grand View most recently improved to 4-0 in dual matches this season with a 23-13 win over then-No. 9 Morningside (Iowa) on Jan. 5. The Vikings took the first four matches, only to see Morningside storm back with four-straight victories of their own. However, the match would go the way of Grand View when Tanner Werner upended Alex Rust, 8-6, at 133 pounds. The Viking's second-ranked Gustavo Martinez wrapped up the event with a 6-3 decision over Garrett Lambrecht at 141 pounds
In addition to Grand View's run at No. 1, three of the remaining top five hold strong for the third-straight poll. No. 2 Southern Oregon, who boasts 11 ranked individuals, including a poll-high four top-ranked grapplers, remains second with 126 points, while Great Falls (Mont.) is third with 92 points and No. 4 Montana State-Northern rounds out the trio with 87.5 points. Great Falls is tied with Grand View with a poll-best 12 ranked individuals. No. 5 Campbellsville (Ky.) climbs one spot from the last rating with 83.5 points to round out the top five.
All ten weight classes retained its top-ranked wrestler. Southern Oregon's Mitchell Lofstedt (125 pounds) - now ranked for 14-straight polls -, Jimmy Eggemeyer (149 pounds) and Brock Gutches (174 pounds), along with Ethan Hinebauch of Montana State-Northern take their fifth No. 1 ranking of the season, including the preseason poll. Myles Mazurkiewicz of Great Falls (141 pounds), Brian Block of Morningside (184 pounds) and Derek Nightser of Grand View (197 pounds) have earned top mention in four-straight polls.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the four Qualifying Groups.

Notes: (all information dates back to 2000-01 season) There have been 21 teams represented through five polls this season (includes preseason poll) ... Grand View's (Iowa) No. 1 ranking is its ninth all-time, which ranks third since 2000-01 ... former NAIA member Lindenwood (Mo.) boasts the most all-time No. 1 rankings with 39, while former NAIA member Notre Dame (Ohio) is second with 14 ... Nine programs have appeared in the top 20 for at least 20-consecutive editions, led by No. 3 Great Falls' (Mont.) and No. 5 Campbellsville's (Ky.) current run of 59-straight polls ... No. 4 Montana State-Northern is the only other school with at least 50-straight appearances (50) ... Southern Oregon's Mitchell Lofstedt has been ranked No. 1 at 125 pounds for 14-straight polls ... Lofstedt (125 pounds), Jimmy Eggemeyer (149 pounds) of Southern Oregon, Brock Gutches (174 pounds) of Southern Oregon and Montana State-Northern's Ethan Hinebauch (165 pounds) have been ranked atop their respective weight class in all five polls this season ... No. 20 Waldorf (Iowa) is making its first Top 20 appearance since March 9, 2012 ... Notre Dame and Lindenwood are the only programs that have spent an entire season ranked No. 1 (Notre Dame: 2010-11; Lindenwood: 2006-07).
