Ocampo, Roberts, Branka win titles at Gord Garvie Festival in Canada

THREE UM-MORRIS' WOMEN WRSTLERS WIN TITLES AT GORD GARVIE MEMORIAL FESTIVAL IN THUNDER BAY, CANADA, JANUARY 8  

Three members of the UM-Morris women's wrestling team won gold medals at the Gord Garvie Memorial Wrestling Festival, hosted by Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, January 8.

Olivia Ocampo (Oxnard, Calif.) won championship honors at 53 kilos/116.6 pounds. Ocampo, a two-time U.S. Junior World team member recorded two falls on the day, pinning a pair of Lakehead University wrestlers, Mel Anderson in 1:24, and Leanne Loney in 2:55. Ocampo is currently ranked second in the United States on the senior level.

Sally Roberts (Federal Way, Wash.) won her second tournament of the season at 61 kilos/134.2 pounds. Roberts placed first at the Keystone Open. Roberts, who was fighting the flu, won a hard fought 5-2 decision versus Megan Dolan of Niagara University, then won by a fall over Nicole Stratt of the University of Manitoba in 1:20.

Samantha Branka (Lincoln Park, Mich.) won the first championship her wrestling career at 70 kilos/154 pounds. Branka opened the tournament with a fall in 1:46 versus Jennifer Viverios of MacMasters University. In the second round of the round robin tournament, Branka lost a 7-6 decision to Kate Wannen of Lakehead University. Branka then pinned Laura Jones of Brock University in 1:00 to advance to the championship finals.

In the gold medal match, Branka had her hands full with Alana Petzscher from Guelph University. Petzscher scored early on two, three point throws to build a 7-3 lead. Branka came back with two, one point takedowns, then locked up a cradle to squeeze out a fall in 2:52 to claim the championship.

UM-Morris' five entries in the tournament brought home three golds, one silver and one bronze medal. UM-Morris and Lakehead University were tied with team points in the tournament, but the championship title was awarded to UM-Morris based upon UMM's three champions, to Lakehead's one.

Kate Zeitler (Gillett, Wis.) placed second at 57 kilos/125.4 pounds. Zeitler lost her first match in the round robin format to Canadian national team member Tanya Verbeck of Brock University 7-2. Zeitler came back to record a fall in 1:14 versus Gayle Zelinsky of the Northwestern Ontario Wrestling Club.

In the semi-finals, Zeitler scored another fall, this time against Elsa Luft of Lakehead University in 1:13. In a rematch of the her first bout of the day, Zeitler once again faced Tanya Verbeck of Brock University, but this time in the championship finals. Verbeck scored first with a two point exposure, then Zeitler scored with a reversal and a exposure to take a 3-2 lead into the second period. Verbeck tied up the score with a takedown to tie up the score at the end of regulation. In overtime with 1:30 gone in the period, Verbeck scored on a arm throw in the zone to win the match and claim the title.

Jenny Donahoe (Goodrich, Mich.) placed third at 48 kilos/105.6 pounds. Donahoe dropped her first match 10-0 to Pam Carter of Lakehead University, then lost by fall in 1:36 to Joanne Devlin, also of Lakehead. In her final match, Donahoe won by fall over Jenette Howe of Brock University in 4:00 after building a 4-0 lead in the match.
