The semifinals of the 2013 Southern Scuffle provided some top tier matchups in what proved to be, yet again, of the toughest in-season tournaments this year.

2012 NCAA runner-up Nicholas Megaludis of Penn State opened up the semifinal round at 125 pounds with a 3-1 decision over Nahshon Garrett of Cornell setting up a final’s match-up with Virginia’s Matt Snyder.

In a slight upset at 149 pounds Cole VonOhlen of Air Force defeated last year’s NCAA runner-up from Minnesota, Dylan Ness, by a 10-5 decision. VonOhlen will square off against NCAA champion Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State in the Scuffle finals.

In perhaps the most top-heavy bracket at the Scuffle, the 165 pound weight class will feature the top two ranked wrestlers in the country in this weight in the finals. Top seed Kyle Dake of Cornell will face second seed David Taylor of Penn State in a rematch from earlier this season in which Dake scored the close decision. Taylor reached the finals in dominant fashion defeating 2011 NCAA runner-up Tyler Caldwell of Oklahoma State by a 10-0 major decision score.

At 174 pounds top seeded Oklahoma State Cowboy Chris Perry will square off against the number two seed Logan Storley of Minnesota in an anticipated finals match-up.

Returning NCAA champions Edward Ruth of Penn State and Steve Bosak of Cornell will meet in the 184 finals.

Defending NCAA champion Tony Nelson of Minnesota will match up against Dom Bradley of Missouri in the finals after Bradley defeated Alan Gelogaev of Oklahoma State by a score of 2-1 in the semifinal round.

Penn State currently leads the team standing with 150.5 points. Oklahoma State stands in second with 130.0 points. Minnesota (127.5), Cornell (117.5), and Missouri (111.0) round out the top five teams after the semifinal round of competition.
