One of the nation’s top college wrestling events, the Southern Scuffle, has begun in Chattanooga, Tenn. on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The tournament takes place in Chattanooga’s McKenzie Arena on Jan. 1-2, featuring 23 teams and over 300 of the top collegiate wrestlers in the country.

The 2013 field is one of the best in the Scuffle’s history, including seven top-25 squads in the 23-team tournament: No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Minnesota, No. 6 Missouri, No. 8 Cornell, No. 11 Virginia Tech and No. 20 Virginia.

Other teams competing include Air Force, American, Appalachian State, Arizona State, Army, Campbell, Cleveland State, Duke, Navy, NC State, North Carolina, Northern Colorado, Ohio, South Dakota State, The Citadel and UTC.

TheMat.com will provide wrapup stories each day from the Southern Scuffle from talented wrestling journalist Roger Moore.

There are seven NCAA champions, 10 NCAA finalists and 24 All-Americans, initially scheduled to wrestle in the Scuffle.

One of the most highly anticipated weight classes in the event will be at 165 pounds, where three-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake of Cornell, 2012 NCAA champion and Hodge Trophy winner David Taylor of Penn State and 2011 NCAA runner-up Tyler Caldwell of Oklahoma State are the top three seeds.

This event will have a huge impact on the college wrestling rankings, both for teams and for individuals.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Flowrestling.org have partnered to bring extensive live coverage of the 2013 Southern Scuffle, presented by Defense Soap.

The broadcast is available to all Flowrestling Tech Wave members. Subscriptions can be purchased on an annual basis for $150 ($12.50/month). Fans wanting to see just the Southern Scuffle can purchase a monthly subscription for $20.

Last year, GoMocs.com streamed just the finals, but Flowrestling will greatly expand that coverage for the 2013 tournament. Competition on Day 1 takes place on eight mats.
