USA Wrestling has announced its lineups for 2000 Developmental foreign tours on the Senior level in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling.These tours are designed to provide the U.S. athletes will valuable international experience and help improve the team's performance on the World level.
There will be fewer athlete on these tours than in recent years, because the U.S. will also be participating in a series of Olympic Qualification Tournaments, which will be held all across the world from January-March 2000. The United States must still qualify at two weight classes in freestyle (54 kg, 97 kg) and five weight classes in Greco-Roman (54 kg, 57 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 76 kg) for the Olympic Games.
Therefore, athletes from the weight classes which are already qualified for the Olympics will participate in the Developmental tours, as well as a few additional athletes.
In freestyle, the United States will participate in five developmental tours.
The first team will compete at the Takhti Cup in Tehran, Iran, Jan. 18-21. This is only the third time the USA has competed in Iran in the last 20 years. The other two previous trips were in 1997, when the U.S. sent a wrestling team to the Takhti Cup and another to the World Freestyle Championships.
Among the athletes on the tour to Iran are 1996 Olympic Lou Rosselli (Edinboro, Pa./New York AC) at 119 pounds. Joe Seay of Perry, Okla., who coached the first U.S. team to wrestle in Iran, will lead the tour.
A second team will wrestle in the Kiev Tournament in Kiev, Ukraine, Feb. 18-20. Amont the athletes will be 1998 U.S. World team members Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds and Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 167.5 pounds.
A freestyle team will also participate in the Poland Open in Varvosie, Poland, Feb. 25-26. Leading the team will be two-time World medalist Cary Kolat (Rices Landing, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) at 138.75 pounds.
A group of U.S. freestylers will also compete at the Cerro Pelado Tournament in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Feb. 26-27, led by 1993 World Champion Melvin Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 213.75 pounds.
The final freestyle tour will be March 4-5, for the Dan Kolov Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria. Among the stars on the trip will be 1999 World Champion Stephen Neal (Bakersfield, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 286 pounds and two-time World medalist Lincoln McIlravy (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 152 pounds.
The Greco-Roman tours will be smaller than freestyle, as the U.S. has three weight classes qualified for the Olympics so far. The U.S. is scheduled to participate in the Takhti Cup in Tehran, Iran (Jan. 18-21), the Granma Cup in Pinar del Rio, Cuba (Feb. 22-23) and either the Sweden Cup in Malmo, Sweden (Feb. 25-27) or Vehbe Emri Tournament in Izmir, Turkey (March 11-12).
Among the star Greco-Roman wrestlers on these tours will be two-time Olympians Dan Henderson (Gresham, Ore./Dave Schultz WC) at 187.25 pounds and Michial Foy (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 213.75 pounds.
The United States will also send two full women's wrestling teams to compete on international tours. The USA is the reigning World team champions in women's wrestling. The first team will compete at the Gilbert Schaub Open in Tourcoing, France, Jan. 22-23. Among the U.S. athletes will be 1999 World Champion Sandra Bacher (San Jose, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 149.75 pounds).
Another team will participate at the Klippan Open in Klippan, Sweden, March 10-12. Four members of the 1999 World Championship team will participate on this tour, led by three-time World silver medalist Kristie Marano (Schenectady, N.Y./ATWA) at 165.25 pounds. Other World team members on the trip are Stephanie Murata (Boca Raton, Fla./Sunkist Kids) at 112. 25 pounds, Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./Minnesota Storm) at 123.25 pounds andLauren Lamb (Farmington, N.Y./Michigan WC) at 136.5 pounds.
