Kent State's Kilgore named MAC Wrestler of the Week

Kent State senior Dustin Kilgore (Berea, Ohio) was named Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week Wednesday.  This past weekend, Kilgore won the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, going 5-0 at the two-day tournament with a pin and two major decisions.  

The No. 1 ranked 197-pounder in all national polls, Kilgore topped No. 3 Alfonso Hernandez of Wyoming in the finals 5-4.  Already the program's record-holder for career victories, the match against Hernandez gave Kilgore his 150th career win.  He also defeated No. 12 Andrew Campolattano from Ohio State 6-3 in the semifinals. 

Kilgore is 15-0 on the season, winning all four tournaments (Buffalo Invitational, Michigan State Open, Navy Classic, CKLV Invitational) he’s competed in.  He also leads the Golden Flashes with six pins and four major deciosions.

SIUE's Patrick Myers named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – SIUE 133-pounder Patrick Myers has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition Nov. 21 to Dec. 4. The selection is made by the league office.

Myers went 4-1 in dual action in earning the honor, including a win over Gardner-Webb's Robbie Golde as SIUE won its first-ever SoCon dual. The Cougars are in their first season as full-fledged members of the league.

The Cresson, Pa., native went 1-1 at the Iowa Duals in Iowa City, Iowa, on Nov. 24. He opened his day with a loss against No. 3 Tony Ramos of the fourth-ranked Hawkeyes before rebounding with a 12-3 major decision over Cornell (Iowa)'s Ben Rosen. Myers also pinned Iowa Central's Tyler Reiste in an exhibition match that didn't count toward his season stats.

At the Hoosier Duals in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday, Myers went 3-0. Myers picked up a 17-2 technical fall over Quin Murphy of host Indiana and added a 4-3 decision over Bucknell's Paul Petrov.

Myers, a redshirt sophomore, also notched a 12-7 decision over Golde as the Cougars earned their first SoCon win, 24-21 over the Runnin' Bulldogs, despite forfeiting two weight classes.

The award is an historic one for SIUE, as it is the first for the program as a member of the SoCon.

SIUE (1-4, 1-0 SoCon) is back in action at South Dakota State on Saturday in Brookings, S.D., at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Also nominated: Dominic Parisi (Appalachian State), Eric Montoya (Campbell), Ugi Khishignyam (The Citadel), Philip Elias (Davidson), Davante Andujar (Gardner-Webb) and Mark Darr (VMI).

CLARION’S FLEMING NAMED PSAC & EWL WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

(Lock Haven, Pa.): Clarion senior All-America wrestler James Fleming (West Mifflin), ranked third in the nation at 157, was named today as the PSAC and EWL “Wrestler of the Week”, for his performance in winning the 157-pound title on Sunday at the Nittany Lion Open at PSU’s Rec Hall.

Fleming went 5-0 at the NLO – including an exciting 9-4 win in sudden victory over PSU’s #5 ranked Dylan Alton in the championship final. The duo were tied 4-4 in regulation and went to overtime. In overtime Fleming posted a five-point move to win 9-4.

During the day Fleming opened the tournament with a fall in his opening match over Mikey Simmons of Rutgers at 4:55. That win gave Fleming his 100th victory in style – it was his 31st career fall.

Fleming went on to defeat Ben Dorsay of Maryland by tech. fall - 17-1 at 6:38, then won 6-0 over James Vollrath of PSU, before winning by disqualification over Brian Realbuto in advance of his win over Alton. Fleming has a season record of 12-0 and a career record of 104-16.

A Sports Management major at Clarion, he is the son of John Fleming and Regina Fitzhenry.

CLARION NOTES: Fleming has a career record of 104-16… He is the 20th Clarion wrestler to reach the coveted 100 win plateau… The most famous in the 100 win club are former two-time NCAA Division I National Champion Wade Schalles, and 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle. Schalles still leads the Eagles all-time with a record of 153-5-1. Angle won two NCAA titles and had a second place finish putting together a record of 116-10-2… In 2012 Fleming was 5th at D-I national earning All-America honors… He posted a 33-4 season record, placed 3rd at Midlands and won his second EWL title, placed second at PSAC's and posted 11 pins and 4 technical falls. A three-time NCAA Qualifier, James was 31-4 in 2011 and 1-2 at nationals. He was EWL and PSAC individual champion, EWL “Co-OW”, and placed 4th at Midlands. He had 11 pins and 5 tech. falls. In 2010 he posted a 28-8 record at 149-pounds, was 2nd at EWL's, 4th at PSAC's, PSAC “Freshman of the Year” and was an NCAA Qualifier with an 0-2 record. He has 31 career falls and 18 technical falls.

Sheptock, Yates named ACC Wrestler of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Maryland wrestler Jimmy Sheptock earned Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week honors after posting a 4-1 record and placing second at the Nittany Lion Open, the conference announced Tuesday. This week, Sheptock shares the award with Virginia Tech’s Peter Yates. 

Sheptock, the 10th-ranked wrestler in the country at 184 pounds, defeated two nationally-ranked opponents en route to the weight-class final on Sunday. In the quarterfinal round, Sheptock defeated 19th-ranked Alex Utley of North Carolina, 8-3, before knocking off 14th-ranked Dan Rinaldi of Rutgers, 2-0, in the semifinals.

In the championship match, Sheptock lost an 11-4 decision to top-ranked Ed Ruth of Penn State, the 2012 174-pound national champion.

Sheptock’s 13 wins this season are a team high, and after his opening round technical fall over Navy’s Colton Vanthof, the Northampton, Pa., native is tied for the team lead with three technical fall victories.

The junior is a first-time honoree and the second Terrapin wrestler to be honored this season. Geoffrey Alexander won the award for the week of Nov. 6.

The fourth-ranked Yates, the defending ACC champion at 165 and the reigning tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler, picked up two wins over top-15 opponents on the road. On Friday, a takedown in the second period bolstered the Conyers, Ga., senior to a 4-2 victory over No. 11 Tyler Wilps of 18th-ranked Pittsburgh. On Sunday, Yates controlled the action with several early takedowns en route to an easy 8-1 win over No. 13 Johnny Greisheimer of 20th-ranked Edinboro. Yates now has 107 career wins, the fifth-most in school history and 51 career dual meet wins, tied for the sixth-most in program history.

Cornell’s Kyle Dake Named EIWA Wrestler of the Week
                                                                       Cornell senior Kyle Dake, ranked #1 in the nation at 165, has been named EIWA Wrestler of the Week after he dominated the opposition at the annual Las Vegas Invitational this past weekend.   
                                                 
Dake, who won the title at 165 pounds, pinned his first two opponents before earning major decisions over his next two opponents. In his semifinals bout, he took care of Missouri’s highly regarded Zach Toal 14-3. He went on to shut out #7 Steven Monk of North Dakota State 6-0 to win the title.

Purvis Named RMAC Wrestler of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Finishing first place in the College 174 division at the Fort Hays State Bob Smith Open, senior Jarrod Purvis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) of Adams State was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week. The decision was announced by conference officials Tuesday morning.

On Saturday, Purvis went 5-0 to become champion in his weight class at the Bob Smith Open. 

Purvis opened Saturday's competition with a 13-4 major decision over Colorado Mines' Andrew Hocutt. Following his opening match, Purvis won three straight decisions to qualify for the first place match. To win the bracket, Purvis defeated unattached Nebraska wrestler, McCoy Newberg in a 5-2 decision. 

Purvis is the first Grizzly this season to earn RMAC Wrestler of the Week. The last ASU wrestler to receive the weekly honor was Jerry Huff (Broomfield, Colo.) on January 31 last season
