Ohio State and Missouri emerged after day one in strong position by placing sixth athletes each into the semifinals of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday. Ohio State leads the team standings with 85 points, followed by Missouri with 80.5 pounds. Cornell and Oregon State are tied in third with 53.5 points, followed by Nebraska in fifth with 50 points. Ohio State is the defending team champions at the tournament. Ohio State semifinalists, with their tournament seeds listed, are No. 4 Nikko Triggas at 125, No. 1 Logan Stieber at 133, No. 1 Hunter Stieber at 141, No. 6 Cam Tessari at 149, No. 5 Andrew Campolattano at 197 and No. 6 Peter Capone at 285. Missouri semifinalists, with their event seeds, are No. 1 Alan Waters at 125, No. 2 Nathan McCormick at 133, No. 4 Zach Toal at 165, No. 3 Mike Larson at 184, No. 3 Brent Haynes at 197 and No. 1 Dom Bradley at 285. I national champions in the field reached the semifinals: three-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake of Cornell at 165 pounds, 2012 NCAA champion Logan Stieber of Ohio State at 133 pounds. and 2011 NCAA champion Dustin Kilgore of Kent State at 197 pounds. As often happens in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas International, there were some unexpected results as the tournament moved deeper in the brackets. A pair of No. 1 seeds were defeated in a highly competitive quarterfinals. The first upset came at 149 pounds, when No. 8 seed Jake Sueflohn of Nebraska defeated No. 1 seed Scott Sakaguchi of Oregon State, 9-7 in sudden victory overtime. At 157 pounds, No. 9 seed Jedd Moore of Virginia defeated top seed James Green of Nebraska, 7-6. Unseeded wrestlers reaching the finals included Gabe Martinez of Air Force at 157 pounds and Blake Stauffer of Arizona State at 174 pounds. Among the other breakthrough performances came from Air Force, which put three athletes in the semifinals: No. 6 Josh Martinez at Air Force at 125, No. 4 seed Cole VonOhlen at 149 and unseeded Gabe Martinez at 157 pounds. Air Force enters Saturday’s final day in seventh place with 42 points.
