“On the Mat" is a presentation of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum. The show can be heard live on the Internet at www.kcnzam.com or locally in Northeast Iowa each Wednesday from 5:00 to 6:00 PM Central on AM 1650, The Fan.

Simpson and Voelker are coming on the program in advance of the Iowa versus Iowa State dual meet that will be held at Carver Hawkeye Arena on Dec. 1.

In 1988, the two former rivals faced each other in the 190 pound weight class in one of the most memorable matches in series history. Voelker of Iowa State (the defending NCAA champion) was leading Simpson of Iowa (a sophomore) 6-1 in the second period of their match. Iowa State was leading 15-10 in the dual. A Voelker victory would assure that Iowa State would win the match.

Iowa had never lost in Carver-Hawkeye Arena up to that point. A 43-match home winning streak was on the line and it was about to be snapped.

But then the impossible happened. Simpson reversed Voelker and stayed on top for almost 40 seconds before pinning him. Some say it was the loudest noise in Carver-Hawkeye Arena following the pin. Iowa went on to win the dual, keeping their home winning streak intact.

Simpson was a one-time All-American for Iowa, placing second at the 1990 NCAA tournament. Voelker was a three-time All-American for Iowa State, winning NCAA titles in 1987 and 1989.
