Bacher pinned three opponents before losing in overtime in the gold-medal match to Myriam Djebaili of France, 4-1. She opened with a pin over Minako Toyama of Japan in 1:03, and then over Carine Decleriuex of France in 2:05. In the semi-finals, she pinned Angelique Griveaux of France in 4:41. Bacher is a 1999 World Champion and a member of the 1999 U.S. Women's World Championship team.
Smith first won by injury default over Fanny Gai of France and then pinned Caroline Dos Santos of France in 0:54. She then scored another pin over Nadege Bourgeouis of France in 1:01, before losing by pin in the finals to Christine Nordhagen of Canada in 1:37.
Others competing for the U.S. included: Julie Gonzalez (Vallejo, Calif/Peninsula Grapplers) placing fifth at 101.25 pounds, Malissa Sherwood (Rocklin, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) placing sixth at 123.25 pounds, Tonya Evinger (Bates City, Mo./Wrestling Central) placing 10th at 136.5 pounds and Afsoon Johnston (San Diego, Calif./Sunkist Kids) competed at 112.25 pounds.
Gonzalez first lost a close decision to Myriam Prost of France, 10-7, then won by injury default over Sandrine Trapet of France.
Sherwood first lost by a pin to eventual champion Saori Yoshida of Japan in 3:55, then pinned her next two opponents. Angelique Vaissie of France in 4:10 and Elzbieta Stryczek of Poland in 4:08.
Evinger had a bye her first round, then lost a close decision to Diletta Giampiccolo of Italy, 5-3. She then won by a pin over Audrey Prieto of France in 0:57.
Johnston went 2-1 at the tournament but did not finish in the top ten. She fist lost a decision to Francine Depaola of France, 10-3, then pinned Claire Prieto of France in 0:49 and Faiza Bjaoui of Tunisia in 2:40.
The team was coached by Lee Allen of San Francisco, Calif. and Mike Duroe of Colorado Springs, Colo.
